Prosecutors Ending Lawsuit Against Lori Drew
from the good-news dept
While there was some concern that prosecutors would push forward with an appeal of a judge's decision to toss out the ridiculous ruling against Lori Drew, federal prosecutors have now said that they're dropping the case and will not pursue it further. Drew may still face a civil lawsuit, but it's a good thing that the government is out of this. No matter what you think of Drew's behavior in dealing with her daughter's friend, Megan Meier, it was never a good idea to twist computer hacking laws to try to convict her.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Re:
Two civil lawsuits would seem appropriate, actually. One from the family of the girl that killed herself against Lori Drew.
And one from Lori Drew against the DA's office....

Re: Re:
We'd be much better off as a society if we weren't so entitled and with so much liability for anything and everything. For whatever reason, it has become so important in the U.S. to make somebody pay anytime something bad happens.
Lt. Jake Stone: You arrested a waiter?
Norman Robberson: Jake, he was rude.
Lt. Jake Stone: Norman, you can't arrest people for being rude. If you could, all of New York City would be on Death Row.

On that note though I am glad this is being dropped as it was such a stretch that it was rediculous. What she did was wrong but if she didn't break a law then she didn't break a law.

If Lori Drew knows what's good for her, she'll take her lumps and just crawl back under the rock from which she came.

Methinks Everyone is Missing the Point Here
The punishment though, has been served and is being served without any need for prison walls or for expensive police supervision and there is no appeal...

Good on the Governor for broadening the law around harassment to include cyber bullying & causing emotional distress to someone else.
