Cyclist Floyd Landis Accused Of Illegal Computer Hacking

from the doping-and-hacking dept

Apparently, a French court has issued an arrest warrant for cyclist Floyd Landis, who won the 2006 Tour de France, but then had the award stripped after he tested positive for abnormally high levels of testosterone, implying some kind of doping. Now, we've argued in the past that the line between drugs and other forms of performance enhancement is pretty blurry at times, but if you're caught breaking the rules, hacking into the computers of the lab holding your test results in an attempt to discredit them certainly doesn't look particularly sporting.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. This is obviously someone who should give up on breaking the rules since he can't do it properly.

    Extraditon?

I wonder if the U.S. will extradite Landis to France they way they've demanded Britain extradite Gary McKinnon to the U.S..

    He Didn't Do it...

The same guy who stuck the testosterone patch on his ass (that he didn't know about) during the TDF spoofed his IP and tried to access the records. What else could it possibly be?

How do they know his blood wasn't spiked be jealous French anti-doping agents?

Or that they didn't spike his food? Or needle him in his sleep?

The whole story with Floyd Landis was weird to begin with and keeps getting weirder. I doubt the truth will ever be known.

You forgot to mention abduction by space aliens who injected him and then returned him.

    Landis Was Framed

The more you learn about the Landis case, the more obvious it was that he was framed. The results the French lab reported, even if properly obtained, and that is a huge if, would have been declared within regulations at virtually any other lab in the world.

If you didn't know anything about the Landis case, if Landis was guilty, and he knew, it, what good would hacking into the lab do for him? How would getting at their records prove his innocence if he was actually guilty?

This is a case where the lab withheld and destroyed crucial evidence. I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

if Landis was guilty, and he knew, it, what good would hacking into the lab do for him?

The theory is that he was fishing for some kind of technicality that he could use to get off. Some place where the lab forgot to cross a T or dot an I, so to speak.

    Landis

Landis is NOT accused of the hacking. He used it in his defense to show the agency's security and methods were lax.

So, you're saying CNET lied? Show your evidence or I'm inclined to think you're the one lying.

Honesty is important in this world.People will forgive someone who admits they did it. But when you continually deceive everyone, you loose your credibility. How could Landis have gained 8 mins. back on one stage of tdf without doping? When pros are at the end of their career, they'll try desperate things. Floyd Landis was a great cyclist, but his cover up no longer makes him a great champion.
