American Idol Contestants Have To Give Up Their Social Media Presence?
from the can't-build-your-own-damn-brand dept
Apparently, you don't just commit to handing over your music recordings if you enter American Idol, but now you have to give up your ability to build your own brand, as well. Hypebot alerts us to the news that American Idol contestants for the latest season were all forced to shut down their Facebook, MySpace and Twitter usage, and point everyone directly to American Idol's own website instead. In an age when having a strong social media presence is important to career success for many musicians, this seems like quite a big trade-off.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Now, with the advent of the internet, things haven't always been so clear-cut, as we keep seeing technically unmarketed content appear on the charts simply through its virtue, the personal promotion from the creators and the amazing marketing machine that filesharing has become.
The day American Idiot contestants can't get a foot through the door will be a good day for humanity.

No, the networks should not get to exercise their unearned government granted monopoly power to exploit others.

Re: Of course
I contend that we can't have some government grant these people monopoly power and then allow them to exercise their unearned monopoly power in the manner that they do.

Dont encourage people to download the music you have had posted, free, on your own personal webspace. Instead guide everyone to Us, we will gladly sell them those tracks*
*you will not receive any royalties or payment.
It is just a fairly hamhanded and early attempt to make sure all success shortcircuited back into the IDOLSHOW
