DailyDirt: Supersuits Are The Next Wearable Tech?

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

All kinds of technophiles are looking forward to new and better-looking smartwatches and wearable devices that don't make a person look like a member of the Borg. Everyone has seen gadgets getting smaller and more fashionable over time, so it's not just foolish optimism to hope that wearable tech will be amazing and cool in a few short years. Some cool wearable stuff is being developed right now, but it doesn't look too fashionable yet. Here are some examples. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post via StumbleUpon.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Re: 70 lbs?

I think the effortlessly part is important here. While I've seen plenty of strong people I don't think I've seen them handle seventy pound anything like it was nothing.

Economically machine strength works out in their favor too. It will probably be cheaper to replace a supersuit or its parts than for workplace injuries from lifting 70lbs, or wrongful death cases. Machines are cheap. Humans are expensive. Just look at the cost of your mechanic vs your doctor.

If you ever need to pitch an alien queen out an airlock in a hurry...

Employees of Daewoo who are building ships in South Korea have access to robotic exoskeletons that can help them lift 70 lbs of stuff effortlessly.

70 lbs isn't so light when you've lifted your hundredth 70 lb load in a day.

It's something called "work". More people should try it.

    Re: Re: Re: 70 lbs?

In your cynicism, you missed the basic point: this isn't about people not wanting to do physical work, it's about employers wanting to maximize productivity.

If a worker is moving large numbers of 70 lb loads all day, they'll be doing it more slowly at the end of the shift at the start. Reducing the physical effort means that the productivity won't fall off over the course of the day.

Supersuits are cool, just be careful you don't punch the wrong button and accidentally kill James Brown.
