DailyDirt: Distant Discoveries

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Astronomers are constantly discovering new phenomena (or really, really old stuff, depending on how you look at it) all the time. There is simply a lot of stuff in the universe and we're not going to ever finish looking at all of it. A sizable chunk of the cosmos isn't even observable to us. But it's still fascinating to try to catalog everything out there. Here are just a few discoveries keeping astronomers busy these days. By the way, StumbleUpon can also recommend some good Techdirt articles, too.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Dat Indian Supreme Court Ruling!

That's basically taking a shitty stick and rubbing it all over legitimate Indian scientists - the ones that haven't emigrated anyway.

"The court had in 2004 also directed the universities to consider if astrology science can be added to the syllabus."
    (from the link)

So where do I get my astrology degree. I want to get at least a masters. Then I can put it on my job application.

I definitely enjoyed participating with Galaxy Zoo when it started. What a cool idea that is!
Now if only we could get more accurate measurements of distance when it comes to this stuff.

Yup... Looking forward to the James Webb Telescope going up in a few years.

But maybe microsatellites will be cheap and plentiful enough to create a huge network of mini-hubbles in LEO by then...?

        Re: Re:

I'm looking forward to that too.

The mini-hubbles idea is an interesting one, it would be a very large array...

I'd like to see two radio telescopes at Earth's leading and trailing Lagrange points. Imagine a baseline 1.73AU long. *drool*

All nice, but how do these news affect me if I am a Capricorn? /sarcasm
