DailyDirt: The Drones Are Coming
from the urls-we-dig-up dept
We've talked about all kinds of drones before and about the FAA restrictions on using the more toy-like versions outdoors. Sometimes people do stupid stuff with drones -- and it really doesn't help to create an environment where people can enjoy drones responsibly. However, people will always do stupid things, and we can't let the jerks ruin it for the rest of us.- A drone with a very small amount of radioactive material was found on the roof of the Japanese prime minister’s office. Japan has no restrictions for flying unmanned equipment below altitudes of 250 meters (except near airplane flight routes), but presumably this incident will spur lawmakers to put more restrictions in place. - Drug traffickers crash landed an overloaded drone carrying methamphetamine near the Mexico border. The drone was a DJI Spreading Wings S900 -- and ruined any chances of an authentic tacocopter for delivering Mexican food. [url]
- A DJI Phantom drone crashed on the White House lawn earlier this year, and the pilot turned himself in, saying it was just an accident. This is why we can't have nice things. Thanks a lot. [url]
- Doug Hughes, a 61-year-old mailman from Florida, flew his gyrocopter and landed it on the West Capitol lawn to make a statement about campaign finance reform. Okay, this wasn't a drone, but delivering letters by hand is always more personal, isn't it? [url]
Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
