DailyDirt: Smarter Soda Machines

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Water fountains have improved somewhat over the years, but soda machines are really getting quite advanced. Not just limited to refrigerating sugary beverages, these vending machines are going to start tracking consumer behavior and offering some entertainment along with a frosty refreshment. Here are just a few examples of high-tech vending machines trying to connect with customers to sell more soft drinks. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I can just see it now...

When the processor in a soda machine costs more than all the sodas in the machine itself, there'll be high-tech thieves extracting those cores....

    Blue Screen of Death?

More like Blue Screen of Thirst.

Though really, they should just put Linux on these. My motto is "if it's good enough for NASA and a wristwatch, it's good enough for anything." Especially since you can install it on a dishwasher. Not all THAT different from a coke machine, really.

" Getting to first base with the soda machine didn't offer any additional benefits."

    Uh, Michael, you did what?

Anybody here tried the thing where you push the soda selection buttons in a certain order and hold down the coin return lever and it's supposed to eject all the change in the machine? Does it really work?

      Re:

A lot of these use the default password "4231" (i.e., 4th button, then 2nd, etc., going left-to-right then top-to-bottom). You can see the sales statistics, error logs, and some other things, but AFAIK can't reprogram the machine or make it dispense money/product.
