DailyDirt: Going To Space

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Manned space exploration is a lofty goal that requires quite a bit of groundwork before people crawl into a metal cage strapped to a rocket. Only about a dozen countries have successfully launched objects into orbit, and the list of nations that can send people into space is much shorter (with the retirement of the space shuttles, the US arguably is not on the list anymore). But rocket technologies are only getting better and less expensive, and there are more and more plans (both governmental and commercial) for humans to explore space. If you'd like to read more awesome and interesting stuff, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

where do commercial space companies fit...

into the US's "loss" of astronaut-worthy launch vehicles? The US govt has partially subsidized some of the private aerospace industry....

Yes. And by the way, outsourcing and budget cutbacks to NASA under the Bush Administration likely made these engineers valuable in other countries.

Remember, vehicle launches happened in Houston, "Huston, we have a problem"... Seems Old Bush's Buddies didn't too much care for rocket science, they preferred to build pipelines instead.

Launches happened in Florida. Astronaut training happened in Alabama. Mission control was based in Texas.

A one-way trip to Mars doesn't sound altogether unattractive right now, but no way in hell am I participating in a damn reality show.

    1) Mars One is now looking for people willing to become astronauts, train for 8 years, and go on a ONE-WAY trip to Mars

    2) MRI scans of astronauts who spent over a month in space show that long term exposure to microgravity can damage eyeballs and parts of the brain

    - Could be a tough sale
