Defense Department Blocking Any Website With Wikileaks In The Title?
from the department-of-denial dept
Given the Library of Congress' silly decision to block Wikileaks' website, we've been informed by a reader at the Defense Department that filters of DoD computers currently seem to be blocking access to any website that has "Wikileaks" in the title. The reader (who acknowledges this policy is pretty freaking stupid) was wondering if we might stop using Wikileaks in post titles so that he can continue to read our coverage -- since the filters do allow him to access stories with Wikileaks in the text, rather than the title. First off, we're not going to do that (if you want, try using an RSS reader or reading the stories via the front page) but more importantly, what is the Defense Department thinking? What a hamfisted attempt to block access to information that's widely available.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Okay, well, the more I read about the DoD and their methods, the more I realize that they all subscribe to Popular Mechanics and did something like this for Halloween. Click through- Something's definitely wrong with this pumpkin [LINK]

...this is Joe Lieberman, isn't it. If yes, then two things:
1. Pick a party
2. Try to look less like Emperor Palpatine and sound less like that droopy cartoon dog

I do not remember packing up and moving to China ... but it sure looks like that is what happened. I expect to see tanks rolling down main street anytime now.

or on a lawyer hunting trip (oops, hunting trip with a lawyer)...
or getting a 20,000-hour checkup on his/her mechanical heart (the original one having been removed during a previous administration)...
it's so hard to remember which story we're pushing this week.

Not only stupid, but dangerous.
Perhaps the geniuses at the DoD don't realize that they are aiding terrorists with policies like that. They give our "enemies" a ridiculously simple method of hiding from the DoD, while they cover their ears and say "LALALALA I can't hear you"

Specific Orders
This includes at home in our personal lives. We are prohibited from viewing the Wikileaks website, and also media outlets such as the New York Times, and any others that publish the information.
Frankly I find it infuriating...
