DailyDirt: Space, The Final Next Frontier...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

The space right above our planet's atmosphere is cluttered with human technology and space junk, and it's getting more crowded up there all the time. Sure, the vastness of the universe is practically infinite, but there are only a few Lagrange points, and artificial satellites have started to run into traffic problems -- including intentional satellite destruction that might not be quite innocuous. Wars over outer space might become a real thing in the not so distant future, if it's not happening already. After you've finished checking out those links, take a look at our Daily Deals for cool gadgets and other awesome stuff.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

About 1,300 active satellites are orbiting right now [...]
Does that number include the moon? ;D

      Re:

Half the active (and hibernating) satellites of the entire world are owned by the US militery.

Maybe the Pentagon should be asked to clean after themselves for a change?

        Re: Re:

Your comment is hardly apropos of mine given the fact that I was jokingly pointing out the little known fact that the moon is an active satellite (it orbits the earth, reflects the sun to bring light to the night sky, and has an effect on the tides).

    Largrane points?

I'm pretty sure that should be "Lagrange points."

I'm thinking orbit is where the next war will be fought.

Could be a cool video game...
