DailyDirt: Kids Do The Darndest Things
from the urls-we-dig-up dept
Helium balloon rides to the edge of space seem to be getting more popular these days. Anyone can do it, so a bunch of kids are. It's the new Mentos-and-Diet-Coke thing to do. Still, it's fun, so here are few interesting "space" projects from kids.- A Peep is taking a ride on a weather balloon to the edge of space -- a somewhat new form or Peep torture from a 9yo boy. Insert a pun here about how there's no sound in a vacuum -- hence no peeps in space.
- High school students from around Las Vegas have documented their own helium-filled-balloon-to-space project -- which cost them about $75. Pretty soon, kids are going to need a license to buy helium balloons.
- Some New Jersey high school kids who sent up their own weather balloon also got accepted to fly onboard a NASA Microgravity aircraft to teach them about helium balloon buoyancy in other gravity environments. Lucky! [/Napoleon Dynamite voice]
- The NASA Florida Space Grant Consortium has sponsored several student experiments to fly aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Endeavour gets to a bit higher altitude than a helium balloon....
- To discover other interesting crafty projects, check out what's currently floating around the StumbleUpon universe.
Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

done and done, yet another problem costing us who knows how much solved by yours truly. :) Maybe tomorrow I'll come up with an overly simplistic but potentially workable solution to world hunger.
The balloon thing is pretty cool though.
