DailyDirt: Creating A New Best Friend For Us...

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Dogs are often referred to as man's best friend, but it's not certain how this relationship developed in the first place. Did early humans purposefully domesticate dogs from their wild ancestors, or did we just stumble upon nearly tame dogs and develop a bond? Experiments such as the domesticated fox demonstrate that it's not too hard to tame certain animals in a relatively short period of time. Perhaps we're on the cusp of even more advanced domestication techniques, and hyper-intelligent parrots are just around the corner. GMO pets could be our next best friends. After you've finished checking out those links, take a look at our Daily Deals for cool gadgets and other awesome stuff.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Genetically engineered, customized dogs? I say we give 'em all thumbs so they can finally play poker for real.

Dogs make lousy poker players. They always wag their tail when they get a good hand.

They think every hand is a good hand though, so it's not much of a tell.

"but it's not certain how this relationship developed in the first place."

Dog love human food. Cook some food over a camp fire and feed it to a dog, he'll be your friend for life. I'm pretty sure our relationship with dogs started by feeding them food.

I've never met a dog that didn't wig out when a human starts eating food around them.
