DailyDirt: Engineering Food For Every Occasion...
from the urls-we-dig-up dept
The preparation of food has changed a quite a bit over the last hundred years or so. Sure, some things will probably never go out of style, but a few dishes will never be the same once food engineers get their hands on them. Here are a few quick examples of foods that folks are working on.- A nasty fungus is killing off the popular Cavendish banana. And if it's not stopped, yes, we'll have no bananas. [url]
- The veggie burger is evolving slowly to be more palatable for restaurant-goers and the general public. But stop comparing it to a burger -- because it'll never be the same. [url]
- An Australian brewery has created a "space beer" called Vostok -- a beer that's designed to be consumed in zero gravity environments. Regular beer induces a disgusting "wet burp" in zero-G, and this ain't no Star Trek synthehol. [url]

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

"Lack of genetic diversity does place the banana in a precarious position, and the danger posed by Race 4 [the fungus strain] to the Cavendish is real."
