DailyDirt: Making Spirits Bright

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

There was a time when making your own alcohol wasn't a completely legit thing to do. Sure, now anyone can just go down to a corner store almost any time and pick up a chilled alcoholic beverage, but if you're a real do-it-yourself-er, you won't want to drink just anything that comes in a pretty bottle. Here are a few projects you might want to check out someday when you're not feeling like guzzling something made by Anheuser-Busch-Inbev-SABmiller. After you've finished checking out those links, take a look at our Daily Deals for cool gadgets and other awesome stuff.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Keurig-like beer?

Will they let you use non-PicoBrew packs of hops/grains/stuff?

    Make trash-wine or moonshine

I'll leave a link to one of my favorite YouTube channels where he explains how to make mock-wine or moonshine.

His usual schtick is to dissect cheap Chinese LED lights and electronic crap, so this is a little different for him, but interesting.

It's not real moonshine unless it's made in a still cobbled together out of old car and septic system parts by someone who unironically listens to banjo music. Even I know that and I'm from Europe.

And the PicoBrew actually looks like a really interesting and useful bit of kit, but I think they could stand to de-emphasise the use of premade ingredient kits; that's fine if you're just starting out and teaching yourself to use the equipment, but if you don't start having a go at your own bespoke ales then you're missing the point.

Having premade beer kits is just silly, and the PicoBrew makes it even sillier. All you're doing with a picobrew is buying someone else's premade beer that you have to wait 2+ weeks to drink. Why not just buy a few six packs from you favorite brewery instead? You've had exactly as much say in how it's made.

I love homebrewing, but using a kit means it's not your beer. Most of the fun comes from varying your recipes and seeing what you end up with, whether it be awesome or awful.

Premade kits are great for beginners. Kind of like training wheels on a bike.

The old bread idea is interesting although I'm curious how they prevent a stuck mash.
