DailyDirt: More Modern Musical Instruments

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Learning to play music takes a lot of time, practice... and oftentimes an expensive musical instrument. Sure, there are some cool toys that aren't too pricey, but maybe technology could help make playing instruments easier and cheaper. Here are a few musical gadgets that might fit the bill. By the way, StumbleUpon can recommend some good Techdirt articles, too.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Vocaloid!

Here's another bit of modern music that hasn't been mentioned, and has gained more than a cult following. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocaloid =)

What Do You Mean, The Theremin “Didn’t Really Catch On”?

Seems like every few decades somebody rediscovers the Theremin, thinks it’s neat, and wonders why nobody used it much before. And after trying it for a while, they discover how boring it really is, and quietly drop it.

It was all throughout the music for Forbidden Planet. It was done to death in the Beach Boys’ Good Vibrations. Isn’t that enough?

    one of those decades

If you'd looked a bit further on Kickstarter...
(And yes, I helped fund this. Apparently the Beach Boys wasn't enough for me.)

    Desktop theremin

If you have a touchpad, this is a fun little theremin put out by Synaptics for their touchpads:

Synaptic Touchpad Theremin. Been playing with mine for years. There's also a drum pad there.

    Re: one of those decades

Hmm. That's a digital theremin... but I was thinking more of a theremin that used a video camera instead of capacitors -- like a Xbox Kinect version of a theremin.
