Can't Stop Social Media-Driven UK Riots? Go After Social Media-Driven Water Gun Fights

from the that'll-teach-'em dept

As UK politicians and law enforcement still argue over things like blocking access to social media or shutting down Blackberry Messenger during times of riots and/or protests, it seems that some UK police know when to just jump right in. They've arrested and charged a guy for daring to organize a water gun fight using Blackberry messenger and Facebook. We're not making this up, though we wish we were:
The 20-year-old from Colchester was arrested on Friday after Essex police discovered the alleged plans circulating on the BlackBerry Messenger service and Facebook.

The unnamed man has been charged with "encouraging or assisting in the commission of an offence" under the 2007 Serious Crime Act, police said.

He was arrested with another 20-year-old man the day the water fight was allegedly due to take place, and has been bailed to appear before Colchester magistrates on 1 September.
It's a "serious crime" to organize a water gun fight? Is there no right to bear supersoakers?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Actually, it would appear to be an issue of lacking a "public assembly" permit. A large scale public event requires a permit and consideration with the local police to insure everyone's safety.

It's one of the reasons flash mobs are so dangerous, too many people in a place that isn't set up to handle it, without security.

somone gets sick, possibly with pneumonia. This is not as funny as you people think. Water guns these days can hold a lot of water (a lot more than they used too). That water can get people soaked from head to toe. With the days getting shorter and summer coming to an end we all need to recognize the dangers of having wet hair and/or clothes in cold weather.

In other news, rioting in London was empowered today when Riot Police were confronted by large slip 'n slides shuttling the protesters from storefront to storefront.

Chief Constable Wiggum P. Jackhole was quoted as saying "We were totally distracted by not only how fast they were heading down those slides, but all the young ladies in white shirts zipping by!"

He added that in the above cases, Riot Police had troubles wielding their nightsticks.

Prime Minister Cameron has called for a ban on all tight fitting white t-shirts and wet plastic throughout the UK.

FTA - "However, opponents of the ban say a super soaker filled with hydrochloric acid would prove “highly effective” in a number of situations e.g. incapacitating a home intruder, bringing down game on a hunt, overthrowing a tyrannical government – and therefore should be permitted on constitutional grounds."

(Some guy possibly Benjamin Franklin) Since when is the "free world" the "free world but only if you have a permit"? We need to stop this absurd interference into people's lives. If you're going to live on the backs of the taxpayers in a home that's *not* yours, but rather owned and paid for by the people, then you damn well better make sure you discipline your own kid and make sure he's not out looting and burning down the homes of the people who pay for yours, or live with the consequences.

After Such a big riot that took place, authorities must be on a high alarm, and probably on their cop/mind they think that rioters can use nicknames for a true riot, and this one can pass without notice on black berry networks, although they should investigate the facts first before accusing some innocent person that just want to take a gun bath with their pals.

Since we know they are monitoring social networks, why don't we create a bunch of fake accounts and announce a bunch of huge permit lacking parties. That could overwhelm them to the point that they stop bothering.

Also, can you really get in trouble for lacking a permit if the event hasn't occurred yet? Sounds a lot like pre-crime.

You have to bear this in mind:

For some families, the welfare system (including housing) means that you have more household income than working full-time.

Added to that, that the average income stashed in accounts of the Cabinet members is £500k, which they aren't paying full taxes on, and you can see, at least in part, why people are so upset with the Government over here.

Punishing those who did criminality? Sure thing. Evicting others for something they personally didn't do? Not so much.
