PETA Jumps The Dolphin-Free Shark; Opens Own Porn Site

from the and-we-all-thought-we'd-seen-the-last-of-torture-porn-after-Saw-XXIII dept

Of all the entities looking to take advantage of the brand (dare I say, "spanking?") new .xxx TLD, I would imagine that most of us would have put PETA somewhere toward the bottom of the list. True, it has been known to throw around a lot of (human) skin in order to draw attention to boobs ass well-turned ankles the plight of suffering animals, but is PETA finally dropping the pretense (along with most of its proverbial clothing) and going all porno on us?

The answer is "yes," with a "but":

Reuters reported the story, saying the anti-animal cruelty organization is staking its claim to peta.xxx, which will serve as an animal cruelty awareness and pornography site. Peta has pushed the limits of its animal cruelty ads often in the past with near-nudity, racy slogans and a lot of shock value.
Never before in the history of everything ever has the phrase "animal cruelty awareness and pornography site" ever been uttered (or typed). It's truly a groundbreaking achievement, one that will likely be refreshingly free of bandwagon jumpers. Porn has long been known for "raising" things, but "animal cruelty awareness" has never been one of them. How exactly does PETA plan to do this? I'm glad/sickened you asked:
"As soon as people land on the site they will see some explicit content, those tantalizing images that they'll be hoping for," Rajt said of the site's content. As they go deeper into the site, however, visitors will find graphic images of animal abuse.
Now, I'm no sociologist but I don't imagine that your average internetizen is going to be too interested in shocking images of animal abuse while abusing themselves. I could be wrong, but considering there are thousands of other cruelty-free porn sites available, I can't see this juxtaposition raising much more than frantic mouse fingers in a one-handed effort to steer back to a "happier place."

However, I can see this attracting a certain subset of society, one that usually ends up behind bars doing multiple life sentences after a long manhunt and several trips to secluded areas to identify dental records. The thought of someone steering towards PETA's proprietary blend of eroticism and animal torture by choice is more than a little disturbing. One can almost picture the "enthusiast" down in his basement, shouting "IT PUTS THE 'NOT APPROVED FOR COMMERCIAL SALE' LOTION ON THE SKIN" in the general direction of the petting zoo imprisoned at the bottom of a 6-foot-hole while dancing around to Moby's latest, making "Herbal Essence" noises and trying on a new prom dress made from the skin of last year's prom queen.

Most people view torturing animals as the first sign of a "troubled youth who always kept to himself until one day his house was swarmed by the SWAT team, at which point we all realized that the smell wasn't a backed-up sump pump, but dozens of decaying corpses." Somehow, combining porn and tortured animals seems like the sort of thing that someone should be monitoring (from an unmarked van) rather than using to "raise awareness."

Maybe it will all be just fine. PETA's spokesperson seems upbeat:
"It can be a pretty depressing subject," Rajt said about animal cruelty, "We hope it'll grab people's attention, get them talking, and ultimately get them to ask questions."
True that. People enjoying porn love to be interrupted by disturbing images and random conversation. This could bring about a whole new dialogue about animal testing, one that most likely will start with "Doesn't anyone knock anymore?" and ends with "It's not what it looks like. I was actually masturbating to normal porn."

    Happened to me once...

"People enjoying porn love to be interrupted by disturbing images and random conversation."

There I was, enjoying a solitary moment in my room as a teenager, when my father burst through the door with a napkin in his hand.

"I just fucking smashed the shit out of this spider!" he claimed gleefully. "Now let's discuss the implications on life in general and...WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN THAT GIMP MASK!!???"

I've been addicted to animal abuse ever since....

    Nudity does not equal porn

As far as I've read so far, the proposed site is just an extension of PETA's naked people publicizing animal rights. PETA has promised "tantalizing" content, but the "porn" claims seem to be more hostile reaction to a publicity stunt than reality. I rather expect it will be less porn than, say, and episode of True Blood.

PETA likes publicity. So far, this campaign with all the pearl clutching outrage to it is working very cost effectively.

    PETA is strange.

I am active in the area of animal rescue and I can tell you that PETA is viewed as a rather strange organization by mainstream animal activists. They maintain that just about all human-animal relationships are wrong. In addition to opposing animal abuse they are opposed to zoos, farm animals and pets. Yes, they feel living with an animal as a pet is wrong. They may even disparage service animals such as therapy dogs and guide dogs for blind persons. They kill dogs and cats that they have "rescued" to spare them the suffering of being somebody's pet and are opposed to the use of animal products in any form. I think some of them are opposed to shearing sheep for their wool. This extreme position benefits neither human nor animal. I am sure they are sincere in their beliefs but unfortunately they believe crazy stuff.

It could be worse: at least they're not crucifying people, have "Crusades" where thousands (millions?) die or flying planes into buildings which then collapse in a curious manner resembling a controlled demolition despite the fact no other skyscraper in history has ever been brought down by plane impact or fire...

I'd put PETA on the "not quite dangerous" end of the crazies list.

    People Eating Tasty Animals

Older readers may remember when PETA convinced some judge to take a PETA website away from the first guy to own it.

He had used the site to put up his parody, "People Eating Tasty Animals".

I've never had any respect for PETA after they got that judge to help them steal that guy's website.

Shades of 'good old days' of religion and commerence...

Looks like PETA is simply practicing techniques harking back to the 'good old days' or ancient religion and commerence, offering up sex as an inticement for funding of the 'cause' - like the religions of Rome/Greece, or getting a client to sign a deal, like the banking systems of Imperial China.

Love or Hate PETA - at least they are being honest about what they are trying to do, stick a pair of teats in your face for you to cough up some coin.

And then one of the higher ups at PETA will send out an email saying he is sorry for the confusion and outrage that this new change has cause and he will be splitting up the two sites. peta.xxx will remain a porn website without any animals involved while petster.xxx will feature images of animal cruelty. He'll hope he can regain your trust, but all of PETA's long time supporters will abandon PETA because of this

"The aluminium alloy of the aircraft hulls, which also contains magnesium, melts at a temperature of 660o C. Experience gained from the aluminium industry suggests that it may have taken between half and three-quarters of an hour to reach such a temperature. If molten aluminium is heated further to a temperature of 750o C, it becomes just as liquid as water. I presume that this is what happened within the Twin Towers, and that the molten aluminium then began to run down into the floors below."

He makes no reference to the maximium heat that could come of a fire containing office supplies, offices, building and jet fuel but he seems to know a little bit about these sort of things...

"In a "controlled burn" (where oxygen and fuel are regulated in an optimal mix), jet fuel will reach a maximum temperature of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit"

"Jet A is the same stuff burned in conventional steel wall heaters. In an open-air office fire such as that at WTC (called a "dirty burn") kerosene or any hydrocarbon will burn at around 500-700degrees Fahrenheit"

    from a "truther" site: http://www.911weknow.com/911-faqs/8-q-doesnt-jet-fuel-burn-very-hot

so your "facts" need some checking. I imagine there would be quite a lot of oxygen rushing into the building with the pressure change when the seal broke. So it would probably be hotter than a normal "dirty burn" or office fire.

This is the dumbest idea PETA has ever come up with. There are much better ways to spread awareness. A Porn site?? really? Who's brilliant idea was that?

Why not launch a preventive promotion, geared towards teenagers (the next generation).

Also, keep in mind that showcasing photos of animal cruelty doesn't necessarily make people want to help, many people cannot bare to view that kind of material.

In my opinion funding should be spent on providing society with tools to prevent Animal Cruelty, and a way to fight against large meat and like companies by passing laws to protect the way animals are treated by forcing penalties. For the larger companies, attacking their money flow is the only way to really make a difference, and the only thing they will respond to.

Obviously there are many different facets to Animal cruelty, that should all be addresses by society as a whole, but a porn site is seriously not the way to go.

On a separate note to PETA: Imagine how much more you can do for animals with the money you spend sending every household a bunch of printed stamps and labels, that's the first thing that crosses my mind when I receive those in the mail.

With that said, I appreciate any foundation dedicated to helping animals and children.
