Kickstarter Project Looks To Print SOPA/PIPA On... Toilet Paper?

from the where-they-belong? dept

I'm kind of wondering if this one would have gone over better a few months ago, when SOPA and PIPA were still on the legislative agenda, but Andrew Couts at Digital Trends points us to a bit of a silly Kickstarter project to get the text of SOPA and PIPA custom printed on a roll of toilet paper (where they belonged in the first place). SOPA is pretty long, at over 70 pages (PIPA was a lot shorter), but there's still some extra space, where backers can leave their "own messages" for bathroom reading about SOPA or PIPA.
So far, the project doesn't have many backers, and looks like it has a pretty good chance of failing, but it is notable just how ingrained the absolute badness of these bills has become in the culture today.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I've wanted to do this with the constitution

And send it to every member of Congress and the white house for years. Ever since some moron dreamed up the Patriot act.

Of course, I've researched things since then, and found out that this should have printed and sent out 75 years ago.

    Shiny though

A thought occurs: ya know how sometimes brand names become synonymous with certain things; like xerox meaning copy or coke for soda--its within the realm of possibility that SOPA may become a word synonymous with toilet papar...

We're better off putting the names of the supporters on the rolls so that we have a temporary reminder of who to never listen too.

It's probably been said before but in swedish the word "sopa" has a few different meanings, one of them being "a piece of trash"...

    More

I think they should have printed out ACTA and the Patriot ACT along with those supporting and voting for each.

But I totally agree that every member of congress should be getting at least 1 roll a day delivered to their offices as a complimentary reminder that people who employ them (by voting) are aware and watching.

Would the US dare to claim that printing the bills on tp was a copyright violation?

    How soon...

... until Congress sues them for copyright infringement and stealing their words and has ICE shut down Kickstarter for causing the piracy?

    toxicity?

Cute idea, but it raises concerns in my mind about the toxicity of ink, not just to humans, when introduced to septic tanks and sewage systems. I really don't know how toxic modern ink is but why introduce it for unnecessary reasons?

About damn time. I've been printing SOPA and PIPA onto paper to use for post-defaecation cleaning and... well, let's say it didn't provide the best feel for the job.

Re: I've wanted to do this with the constitution

Dude, the Patriot Act only exacerbated what was occurring since Nixon and Reagan's era.

Also, the Patriot Act was the FBI's wishlist come true. Now they get to "play" with the NSA's new "toys".
