DailyDirt: Figuring Out Forgetfulness

from the urls-we-dig-up dept

Few people wouldn't want the ability to remember facts with ease. The skill of memorizing vast amounts of information could be useful for so many tasks, but unfortunately, while there are a variety of techniques to help with impressive memory tricks, there's no magic bullet for general learning. Here are just a few interesting studies on memory that could be worth remembering later. If you have some more free time, check out this unrelated (but not entirely random!) Techdirt post.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    precise lobotomies, yay!

Erasing memories might be an easy thing to do technologically someday, but imagine all the mis-uses for criminal activity... no need to plead the 5th if you can't remember anything, but the brain scars might be incriminating.

"...but the mechanism hasn't been studied extensively until recently. "

Oh how wrong you are. I studied it very extensively years ago. I just can't remember what the results were.

    Well, that explains...

... how I managed to ace high school chemistry despite sleeping though most of class.

Marijuana is well-known to have side effects that impair memory functions...

Are they doing a drug study for this? I wonder how they'll convince people to volunteer...
