Join The Conversation: Help Create An Innovation Agenda For The Next Administration

from the talk-talk dept

Last week we announced an interesting project over at our Step2 crowdsourcing site, in which Darrell West of the Governance Studies program of The Brookings Institution was seeking feedback on a number of different items to include in a possible report on an "innovation agenda" for the next administration. There's been a fantastic ongoing conversation over there, with people voting various items up and down, discussing the different items and many adding their own suggestions as well (some of which have received quite a few votes). It's been really fascinating to watch, but it's not over yet. If you just checked it out last week when it was announced, you've likely missed many of the ongoing discussions and additional items from other users. Go check it out.

Some of the more interesting discussions, from my perspective, aren't necessarily those that are based on ideological differences, but those that focus on just what makes sense to be in an innovation agenda. Does it need to be clearly measurable? If you can't determine if something succeeds, does that belong? I think these are good and useful questions. We'd love for you to join in as well with your own thoughts. If you already have a Techdirt account, it works on Step2 as well, so no need to create a new one. If you don't have an account... well, it's quick and easy to set one up.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

113 comments, half from Masnick a bunch from Marcus and a total of fewer than 10 non-TD staffers. Seems like perhaps you have not CwF.

If you want to CwTDF you need FUD, lies and conspiracy theory- not ideas.

Step 1: Patent process for innovating.
Step 2: Sue every company that innovates
    ...
    Profit!!!

    Obama will win.

Please list ideas in how to convert current flower beds into vegetable garden beds.

Critical importance is determining which food crops can be grown in winter months without supplying heat as inflation will place such luxurious as heat and water outside of expected income range.

Fortunately house is old with fireplace and chimney and there is plenty of scrap wood that may be easily acquired which will be nice on cold days. Also library is close and closes rather late. Hope there is a seat available.

This may sound rather dynamic but one must realize that not only is Europe slated for destruction after the election but that the US state and municipal bond markets are only waiting for the election to conclude before they go belly up.

With the Dollar and Euro having no value but debt and the debt having been shown to be backed by nothing but dreams look for a major financial crash which brings us back for the need for winter vegetables and survival food.

    Re:

Forget it, kid. You even think about planting food and Monsanto will sue you out of the poor house and into the extra-poor house.
A better idea would be listing ideas for storing large quantities of possible post-economic currencies. (bullets, water, batteries, etc.)

Desperately trying to drive people to Step2... what's wrong with having the discussion here?

    Re:

Ummm, because that would brand Step2 an utter failure. Seriously, Step2 has been on life support forever. You'd think TD would allow it some dignity in death, but apparently not.

Thank you for the invitation to the conversation to discuss innovation for the next administration in this nation, but the situation could cause much frustration.

Requoted for truth. They are trying hard, but social media requires that people actually participate. Step2 is more like the Techdirt employee and flunky chat area, back patting as they go. It's little wonder nobody from the music industry is interested.

Add to that the motion picture industry, the average TD reader and the general public. I actually think Step2 could be successful with a more sophisticated, open-minded readership. But the TD readership is largely comprised of zealots, alarmists, nut jobs and conspiracy theorists- hardly the demographic required for thoughtful consideration and measured discussion. It's the National Enquirer of tech news and will never be able to play above that level.

Actually, it's one of those deals where "those who can do, those who can't preach".

It's not something by people in the business for people in the business, it's something by a guy trying to get in the middle of the discussion and claim ownership of it, and outside of the "zealots" and such, that attitude just doesn't fly.

Quite simple, the vast majority of the music and movie people in the world are not fans, so they don't connect. And no, they aren't buying the overpriced t-shirts either.

Plural? I believe I am the only ONE.

You forgot the trolls and paid shills, which it appears you are one of.

No no no, its wing nut jobs. I know you hang on Bill O'Reilly's every word and you should know this.

    What a tool.

See, this is why it's hard to take people seriously around here. As soon as anyone around here disagrees or raises a valid point, they are suddenly trolls or worse, paid shills.

News for you: The emperor has no clothes. Step2 is an unmitigated disaster packed with not much more than Techdirt staff and flunkies chatting about businesses they are not in, not part of, and will never be part of.

It's a disaster, the sort of thing Mike would call out those companies he dislikes about at every turn, and yet he sits there acting like it's some great success.

    It's not. It's a dead player.

It's so bad, it makes MySpace look relevant.

Go back through you comments to see where you disagreed positing a valid point...until you guys bring any you will just be bitter naysayers and FUDge packers with nothing but ad hominem attacks and bile spewing rants.

Interesting that an entire TD article pleading with people to "come join the fun" and shape the future of internet policy over on Step2 has elicited a total of five new responses, four of those by a single, dutiful individual. Is there no dignity in death for Step2? If Masnick really wants to jump start Step2, he should start a discussion on what would happen if Bigfoot stepped forward and claimed publicity rights to his images. That would be red meat for the zeroes he hopes will save Step2 from an embarrassing and ignominious demise.

you should go and expend some of your talent over at that rockin' place called "Step2". It's full of witless losers like yourself who'd doubtlessly benefit from your profound insights and pithy remarks.

I was going to see if I could negotiate a wholesale discount and hand them out before the next "Occupy Washington" protest so the cops would know who is most in need of pepper spray.
