Daily Deal: Two-Year Subscription For Private Internet Access VPN
from the good-deals-on-cool-stuff dept
You want a VPN. Really, you do. We don't know what you've been waiting for (a personal visit from Ed Snowden or something), but here's a good deal -- a 2-year subscription for Private Internet Access VPN service for just $59.95 (that's 24% off the regular price). Private Internet Access has some good reviews and has publicly answered TorrentFreak's serious questions about its privacy policies and logging practices. PIA says, "We do not log, period. This includes, but is not limited to, any traffic data, DNS data or meta (session) data. Privacy IS our policy."Most of our readers are familiar with what a VPN service does -- and VPN deals are very popular around here. But if you're not using a VPN and don't know why you'd want to, check out this post from 2013. If you have any interest in being anonymous on the internet, use a VPN service.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It's worth noting that this is one of the few VPN providers that also offers a SOCKS proxy. These proxies (SOCKS4/5 & HTTP) offer much more versatility than a VPN (IMHO) because they allow you to simultaneously use your native IP address and your proxied IP address for different applications, so you can torrent while you browse and post on Wikipedia and other VPN-blocking sites at the same time.
That is, unless perhaps there are some VPNs that can be set up to "pass through" your real IP address on certain ports, and basically function as as a pass-through proxy within a VPN?
That's one of the reasons that drove me away from using a VPN: getting IP-blocked, moderator-queued, and account-banned on sites for appearing as a spammer or sockpuppet account (as you may be sharing the same IP address (or at least IP range) with perhaps thousands of other people). Though I mostly tried out free trials, as maybe paid accounts are abused much less by spammers, trolls, etc and are thus less likely to get punished by annoyed website admins.
It will be interesting to learn if the VPN accounts bought on Techdirt will have any problems posting on Techdirt, due to any spam filters or sockpuppet alerts or whatever else.

Re:
I've been using a VPN for years and don't really see this. With ToR, on the other hand, I'm fed up to the back teeth with Google putting up captchas (that don't work). Also with ToR, Techdirt do sometimes put my comments to one side for an admin to review.
