Live Video: Cory Doctorow Talking With Techdirt About Pirate Cinema, Copyright Law & More

from the book-club dept

It's been a long time coming, due to a variety of issues (mostly on my end from being quite busy working on some stuff, combined with Cory being on tour for his new book), but we're finally having our discussion with Cory Doctorow as part of the Techdirt Book Club about his book Pirate Cinema. At (about) 9am PT, Cory will be joining me in conversation, which will stream live below (barring any technical difficulties). If you're reading this between 9am and 10am (or so), you should be able to pick up the live video. After it's over, you can replay the entire thing at any time. I expect we'll be talking about the book, its inclusion in the Humble Bundle, as well as a variety of other issues that Cory has written and spoken about for years. Should be a great discussion.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Pirate Cinema

The Humble Bundle was the reason I finally bought my Nook. Of course I discovered it because of Tech Dirt. It was a great purchase, stocking me with a host of books for a reasonable price. Pirate Cinema was the first book I read, and I loved it.
    Thanks.

Mike Masnick and Cory Doctorow in the same chat? Damn, if this was a weekly TV show, I'd subscribe to cable just for this...

    Defining the internet?

I think people need to face the facts, the internet simply needs to be defined as "The Modern Plaza."

The internet is nothing other than a modern gathering place in the center of a town where everyone gets together and communicates.

Just you could sell, trade, buy, communicate, protest, petition, learn, and all those other things you do as a community.

      Re: Defining the internet?

The internet is not a global plaza... It's a global democracy. That's a key issue in how to describe this phenomenon.

Look at the amount of disruption that the internet unlocks. You cab learn about history, discover new entertainment, or decide to run a digital store with little overhead if need be.

You can travel to Italy, learn Latin, or work to archive the internet.

It's one of the most terrifying things for secret governments and one of the must enlightening things for those that believe in new ways of moving the world progressively forward.

And it all starts with access to this vast community of people with varying views.

          He's in luck.

With recent advancements in (3D) printing technology, soon we might be able to load our printers with condiments and truly download and enjoy a free sandwich.

So are you stealing the condiments or will you leave the basement to take them from Mom's fridge?

But in the meantime when someone shows you where the lifeboats are on a sinking ship, you'd be better to not criticise them for telling you that you'd be better off using them and not considering some people's plans to try to save the boat by jettisoning the lifeboats to be terribly valid.

Dunno. Why don't you cite where he's trying to force that on to others? No, places where he proves it works and is a viable business model are not saying that.

Or, don't you want to do your own research to prove your own assertions, because the fact that many people who support innovative business models that utilise a free component are not pirates is destructive to your own delusional claims?

I like Cory but Boing-Boing.com is run/admined by some of the most intolerant, closed minded individuals i've ever experienced. Comment on most anything put up that isn't agreeable to their ultra-PC political and social views and you will find not just your account but your IP perma-banned with zero explanation.

trust me when I tell you that I'm not talking about overtly arrogant and/or blatantly ignorant posts.....I'm talking about intelligent debate.

Its really unfortunate because they do some great content. Its when they start veering into political opinion that they seem to lose the ability to think rationally.
