Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Calling Dr Peabody

Cassette audio quality was always heavily dependent on quality of mexia and hardware. MP3 was an early format compromise.

So the question here is - who still has casette audio tape?

Why do douche bags always think they are so cool because they don't have any older media?

      Re: Calling Dr Peabody

Think outside the box...there's a whole lot more on cassette than just prerecorded music.

I've been digitizing cassettes from my own collection and a friend's parents' collection. I don't bother with the music since 99% of what came out on tape is all commonly available or not worth keeping, but there are other gems in there... old DJ mixtapes, unique radio & TV broadcasts, and priceless family home recordings. I sure wish I could have a cassette recording of my dead relatives' voices, sounds which live only in my distant memory now. Being able to provide that for my friend is really nice.

Of course you don't need a specialized piece of hardware like this, but if you no longer have a working cassette deck and don't want to take a chance on one from a thrift store, I'm sure there's a market for it, and even if it's not the greatest, it'll probably be good enough for the less technically inclined.
