Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Does the Arlo system require a connection to the cloud? Or can I run the thing in-house on my own LAN without anything ever escaping to the wild?

    Re:

It's almost completely and utterly cloud-dependent. There's a local storage option with the newer Arlo base stations that will at least allow the system to continue functioning partially if internet connectivity is lost, utilising local recording, but you can't access the base station directly - it's slave to the Arlo cloud.

    Arlo and clouds

I use this system. It does require access to the cloud as AC points out -- both for configuration and for storage. The death of the cloud would be the death of the camera, and if that's a consideration don't buy it. Otherwise, for up to 7 days storage the cost is included with the camera.

NB: I only use this as a consumer. I get no money or thrills from barely recommending it. If it was cloud free I'd be happier. I use the Ubiquiti cameras and NVR for secure stuff... although I've hacked it to do off-site storage.

    Re: Arlo and clouds

Would love one that I could use off of RaspPie computer....
Nice, small(hide it), Not power hungry, and remote capable..
And If I really wanted to could set up with cloud, easily..

Pie does have a camera option, and many types of camera..
also you can get wireless for it..
so you can connect and Download from it anytime you wish..

    Never Again

These things are shit. ANY camera that cant use sftp for local storage so you're not forced to pay a monthly fee is SHIT.
