Ask Jeeves

from the money-lots-o-money dept

Ask Jeeves hits it big, up about 400% on Thursday. This goes to show that there is still money in the basic search category. Red Herring is running an article. Google anyone?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

...and no mention of P.G. Wodehouse...

The character of jeeves was created by British comedy writer P.G. Wodehouse. He was the ideal gentleman's gentleman, and the constant salvation of his dissolute upper-class employer, one Bertie Wooster. The Ask Jeeves site is clearly using the likeness of the Wodehouse character.

However, "Ask Jeeves" never even mention the fact that Wodehouse created Jeeves, even on the "Who Is Jeeves?" page.

    Most annoying...

Also, you get stuck with an annoying "Ask Jeeves" banner when you jump to sites, unless you use the "Open Frame in New Window" feature in Netscape to get away from it.

I was never a huge fan of Jeeves

I'm not sure why. I haven't used it in a long time, but when I did I found it frustrating that I had to ask it a question and then choose which question I really meant. An extra step that I wasn't willing to go through. Also, I'm really not sure I want to ask questions naturally, though I'm sure some people do. In the situations where I do, I find myself using Electric Monk rather than Jeeves...
