9-9-99 and All is Well

from the unless-you-can't-read-this dept

As most people thought, the 9-9-99 date didn't turn off the world's power supplies, and we're all still alive and well. It seems there were basically no problems. So, maybe this will lure people into a false sense of security for Y2K.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    9-9-99

This whole thing is extremely silly since the old programs that would theoretically be succeptible tended to use fixed field. Therefore, 9-9-99 is almost always represented as 09-09-99.

According to a report in one of the UK Sunday papers two real occurrences of
the fabled 9/9/99 bug have been found, one in a non-critical medical
application. It would be interesting to have more information about this as
I have always thought that the 9/9/99 bug sounded like press scaremongering
rather than something that would really arise.

    9-9-99

The reason that 9-9-99 didn't do any thing is because non-techies do not realise that 9-9-99 is a 6(SIX) digit field (i.e. 09-09-99) and NO-ONE uses this as a marker (unlike 999999!). DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING WRITTEN BY NON-TECHIE JOURNALISTS
