How to Get Microsoft Office Cheap

from the fooling-Microsoft dept

The folks over at Salon are all excited because they've figured out a way to get Office 2000 for only $99 by claiming you're a system administrator of a company, and ordering the "training version". Of course, they also mention that you could just borrow someone else's copy and install it, but that's bad, they say, because that's illegal. So, misrepresenting yourself to Microsoft is just fine and dandy, but copying software is bad. I'm not sure I understand the ethics involved in software purchasing these days.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

They're not saying "go do it." In the artice they say that it's still wrong because you'd be lying to microsoft. But in my opinion, microsoft lies to everyone else all the time, and they charge too much for their software anyways, so I dont see the problem :)

This is true... my point was simply that if you're going to "lie" to Microsoft, why bother paying $99 when you can do just as well for nothing at all...
