Everex Dumps WinCE Devices

from the ouch dept

Another company has stopped making WinCE devices. This time it's Everex, which had a pretty good reputation. If anyone's not convinced that Microsoft's attempt to take on the Palm devices has failed, I'm not sure what other evidence they need.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

With no Newton Inc and the Newton engineers

it is a slam-dunk (as it were) for the Palm Computing group.

Ok, ok. Really its about 2 things:
    1) Price
    2) Preformance

The palm wins on price. And the palm preforms as you expect.
WinCE preforms as one has come to anticipate Microsoft products to preform.

But, Bill won't throw in the towel. He sees the embedded market as being a priority...so CE will still remain. For a LONG time.

Hey, I agree with you. Just for the record, I clearly said that Microsoft was losing against Palm devices. I never said
that CE was going away, and I don't expect it to at all. But in that one market, it seems to me that they failed big
time. They have been known to come back from things like that, though. However, having a number of OEMs stop
making CE devices is not a good sign at all.

At the point where for $300 you can get WinCE'd is when M$ has a chance to sell the devices.

Because you can spend $300 and not have to ask the spouse.

(this is right from Jeff Hawkins own playbook)
