"100 million euros split between papers, compared to 1.2 billion to one company? Actually, that IS kinda unfair."
Hardly. Google's ad revenue is for all search ads they served in Germany. The newspapers, however, were just newspaper ads. News reporting is a niche (and a crowded niche at that), internet search is general. Google is guaranteed to get more traffic than a random newspaper because they do more. It's a bit like a windshield repair shop complaining because they make less money than Ford. You can't expect something with a niche market to make as much money as something with a general market, end of story.
Yes, and Google has complied almost immediately on google.ca. The issue here is that the Canadian court wants Google's divisions in other countries to comply with Canadian law as well. You can't expect the U.S. branch of a multinational company to comply with Canadian law just because you want them to.
Google has already complied... on google.ca. Google.com is the American branch and Canada has no control over that. If the court continues down this particularly stupid path, you can bet that google.com will just be unavailable for Canadian IP addresses.
As noble as the endeavor for Wikipedia sounds, they're heading in the completely wrong direction. Money and effort that's being spent getting Wikipedia to impoverished areas would be better spent getting cheaper internet access for those areas. This would allow them to access Wikipedia and anyone else they'd need to. Of course, doing something like this wouldn't give a single company the advantage and make them look like the good guys at the same time, would it?
