Times like this that I wish we had slightly more proactive supreme court who can tell lawmakers that their bill would likely not survive a constitutional challenge.
Problem is that when you click the EULA buried in it is usually a clause that says something to the effect of "we can change this agreement anytime we want and in any manner we want. Also you can only use this for as long as we decide to let you."
Do you want people to ignore your copyright laws, because this is how you go about it.
Do you want services to stop doing business in your country due to it being too expensive to comply, because that is what is going to happen.
I don't understand why these lawmakers aren't looking at what is happening in the real world and crafting their laws to keep it within reasonable limits as opposed to whatever the loudest group says they want.
I could almost swear he was jumping out his his chair and screaming incoherently in that first block of quoted text.
Does he not have staff to do some research for him or is just being an idiot completely ignoring them? If he is ignoring his advisors now, what is he going to do if he gets elected to the presidency? Are we about to see another year of shuffling Cabinet positions right after elections like Trump did?
If Apple did the encryption right then their answer would be "No, we do not have the means to decrypt this." If the law of the land changes and they are forced to put in backd.. "government mandated golden keys" then their answer would have to be "ok, here it is"
I'd say someone needs to release a song about how copyright killed the pop star... but they would just get sued into the ground by the Buggles.. or their estate holders.. and we would never actually get to hear it.
If they continue to charge me the rental fee after the law kicks in then I would just turn off auto draft and mail them a check every month for the amount minus the rental fee. Ties to Russian Intelligence? Why would the Russian government that is so hung up on censorship and restricting access to information have a hand in freeing up information? This makes no sense. An educated population is harder to control so I can't really see this as being something state sponsored with a malicious intent.
So if this does pass Facebook and Twitter should implement the publisher editor function by holding all Facebook and Twitter posts by government officials until someone there can vet and fact check it. I forsee many a politicans posts disappearing into the ether.
The amusing thing is, if passed this would make Trump's calls to 'unmask' the whistleblower an illegal act. In fact ANY unmasking of a whistleblower by anyone other than the person themselves or as part of a trial or hearing... would likely be illegal.
Why is the Legislatuve branch, who are supposed to be making the laws, trying to stick their nose into something the Executive branch is supposed to be doing?
When is the Judical branch going to exercise their third of the checks and balances our government is supposed to be constructed around and slap the Executive and Legislative branches upside the head telling them to stop acting like children?
We can't even get cops here to show up at 2am for an active break-in, yet the Fort Worth PD deployed multiple officers just for a welfare check, and they rolled in SWAT style? Where did they think they were, and what were they expecting to do there?
Um... what. There was only one officer involved and he rolled up and was looking around all quiet like. The total opposite of a SWAT teams flashbang led shock and awe tactics.
