He is partially right. Amazon.com is a US company. If there is a warrant out for the head of Wikileaks, and Wikileaks is in a bad eye of the US federal government, Amazon could face sanctions from not only the US but other countries for "aiding" a wanted criminal. it doesn't even have to be anything to do with the leaking of information. not that it isn't, but if you are wanted by interpol there are treaties we have in place for such things.
Re: They could get nailed for false advertising, though...
Actually, it puts your friend up there because you allowed a 3rd party program access to your friends list. The 3rd party would be the infringing body, not facebook. Facebook only does the friend finder option. IE if you go in to try and find a friend via email address and such. the "ads" are an actual 3rd party app that just gives you a friendlier GUI to do the search with.
it can be used to one, make sure that he never sets foot on any US soil, two, makes it illegal for any US company or any company wanting to do business in the US to also do business with him or anyone he does business with.
It would basically mean nothing cept maybe to any bank of his and such. I would say the NYT but they could still deal with him, they just wouldn't be able to compensate him for it.
Fair use would be the book was talking about those quotes specifically and I believe there also can be no commercial gain for such, though I might be thinking wrong on that.
I may be wrong, as my work blocks the site that has the news article, but were they not just links to the scripts? not actually posting the scripts themselves?
Just sayin, but perhaps go after the site THAT POSTED IT TO BEGIN WITH? its online! anyone can find it! So if I stumble across a diamond ring in the middle of I95 when i stopped to piss on the side of the road, I should be sued for stealing it?
I have no problems with the scans after a flight, the TSA has already found 3 prohibited items on people after their flight in from other countries. (Water, a tube of toothpaste and a sandwich that he didn't eat on the flight). Who knows, maybe one of these people is a terrorist looking to blow up the bathroom in the US!!! THEY ARE SAVING LIVES HERE PEOPLE!!!!!!
At the time Napster was EXPLODING! Fans were getting music that they had no access to other wise. Rare tracks and such. Metallica did just sue napster but also heavily endorsed RIPAA and made poor statements calling their fans thieves simply because they wanted to hear music you couldn't buy anywhere. I can't remember where I heard it, I think it was an interview on MTV back when they still played music, Lars stated that "If you want to hear the rare tracks you need to come to all of our shows." Mid you most of the rare tracts were in Europe and Australia during a time when they were touring abroad. Lars also made the comment much like the Kiss singer did recently of "sue them all to death"
Then, when metallica's next album came out, it did relatively poorly and Lars again blamed the fans, not the fact it was just a sucky album.
Actually, if you want to get it right, using your example, it would be like a police offer pulls you over because you are driving a red car with a dent in the fender. He then arrests you and puts you in jail. If you don't plead guilty he then goes to see where the dent came from hoping that it was a hit and run accident.
In other words, they only did any real investigation if the person didn't pay up. They had what looked like a possible "hit and run" based on extremely loose evidence and hoped the person just paid up not wanting to go through the cost of defending themselves.
Now Darryl, go back into your hole, you aren't supposed to come out until February...
