AOL
Perhaps they think that the internet is synonymous with the old AOL style accounts. Everyone in the house has their own login, so they could just wipe out that particular login and everything will be fine.

Re: doing the right thing is sometimes unsavoury
First they came for the racists and I did not speak out—because I was not a racist
Then they came for the people who talk about their bowel movements and I did not speak out—because I was not a bowel movement speaker
Then they came for the shoe fetishists and I did not speak out—because I was not a shoe fetishist
Then they came for me—and the EFF had been disbanded for trying to help the racists.
The EFF has it right here. If I recall the post you're talking about on TechCrunch, the writer said that the EFF had degenerated into an organization that supported copyright infringers and raporists or something to that effect. I haven't liked them since Robin decided he wants Twitter to censor everything he doesn't agree with so I can't say that particular article surprised me. The whole staff over there has slowly turned into a bunch of douchebags who can't see further than their own little bubble.

I'm going to start a new treaty
I'm going to call it the "Saving the lives and livelihoods of everyone in the world" treaty. It will be an agreement among nations to pay everyone who currently reads Techdirt millions of dollars a day to continue doing so.
If a country doesn't want to sign I'll say that they want to destroy the lives of millions of people. It's foolproof!

Re:
I'm seeing the same thing. I never had any real information on Facebook (I had an account with a fake name that I used to view my friends pictures from time to time) but I have a lot of friends who have recently started moving away from using it since the privacy changes. Of my circle of friends, the only person still using it to any serious extent is always several years behind the "social" technological trends. In fact, she has just recently (in the last 6 months) jumped ship from MySpace to Facebook when she realized no one she talked to was there anymore.

Re: Re: Re:
I'm not saying it can't be rationalized into something tiny. I'm saying that by lumping everyone together they are doing a disservice to the people who are performing their own music. Why should someone every have to pay to play their own music, even if it is a laughable amount?
What if I put together an organization that charged $0.83 a day to everyone in the world in case they were profiting from my music? How do I know they aren't? How do I know you aren't at work right now singing a song I wrote and your co-workers aren't tipping you for it? Better to be safe than sorry, right? It's a laughable amount, so you should pay right up, right?
The truth of the matter is that I'm not even trying to be an ass right now. I remember what it's like playing for my supper and it wasn't fun. That's why I'm not a full time musician. I feel bad for the guys out there busting their hump and paying for their "stage" (which I don't see a problem with), then on top of that having to pay some unrelated company for the privileged of playing music they created. It shouldn't matter how small and laughable the actual amount is, it's the principle. It's the fact that someone who had nothing to do with the music at all gets to collect money on it from the people who wrote and performed it.

Re:
What about the musicians that play their own original music and nothing else? What about the artists (like myself) that play either their own music or music that they have permission to use freely? Should they (we) be charged as well?

After some exhaustive research...
...and a thorough investigation into these pictures, I say that there is no way we could make a determination without recreating the entire thing but video taping it this time so that we know the method she used for taking the pics.
Honestly she's embarrassed about it and doing whatever she can to make it go away. I wouldn't even try to hit her with a bogus copyright claim because she's going to suffer enough just for publicizing it this much.

Licensing
Well, it would depend on the terms of the agreement. I can't say that I agree with it, but if the license stated that the work had to be performed "as is" then there is a good chance Vedder is going to lose this one.

So I should send them a letter to print that says "Thanks for reading our paper. Remember that story about the telcos kicking everyone off the interbutts because it would stop teh piracy? Disregard that, I suck *explicative deleted*.

It scares people. My mother called me from her land line yesterday to let me know they had found the link between cell phones and cancer because she misunderstood the article.
Nothing gets voters to the polls like a good scare.

I hope you were talking about the Anti-Mike when you spoke of Trolls. I'm a (mostly) reformed troll. Honestly I'm more of a jackass than anything at this point.
I'm a huge proponent of "If they complain about their access, remove it". Make them promise to act like adults before giving them back their toys.
