Since when has not fully comprehending an issue ever stopped an American from speaking their mind? It's certainly never stopped me.
I'm a big proponent of the Being Loudly Wrong method of crowdsourcing the perfecting of arguments. It's not like there aren't plenty of people who're quite happy to tell you how you're wrong.
In the world where they believe his site being down for a year actually did anything at all to hinder piracy. If they were correct in that belief, it would have been a major accomplishment since they did it without having to actually prove anything at all in court or spend much money.

Re: What a frightening precedent.
See, the thing is this has been happening since the very first author failed to deliver a book that their publisher felt like publishing. It's not remotely new in any fashion and it's done by basically every publisher. It's far more rare for them to not try to get the advance back from an author who they feel has jerked them around.
Bottom line is they signed a contract to deliver a book that met the publisher's standards and were partially paid in advance on the assumption that they would do so. Unless they signed an uncharacteristically foolishly worded contract, they're well within their rights to terminate it and have their advance returned if that doesn't happen.
Generally the only way a lawsuit ever happens is if the author both fails to deliver a book and refuses to return the advance. Which is almost certainly what happened in these cases.
Personally, I hate to pass up a chance to rip on publishers for being greedy fucks but I can't bring myself to in this case. Unless I hear something to the contrary, it looks like they're simply going after money they're rightfully owed by deadbeat wannabe authors who left them no other choice.

They're also selling a somewhat useful distribution service. So long as they're offering a user experience as good or better for digital goods than illicit distribution methods, they offer value.
Personally, I hate how they include covers in book searches and make each listing take up five times the space it should. Means I get to see 1/5 the number of titles I otherwise would per page. Bad for me because it takes longer. Bad for them because they get less product listings to my eyes at once. Show the covers once I've clicked on a book, until then they're just wasting space and time.

You know, I can't help think that having powdered babies around as an alternative back when bathing in the blood of virgins was the hot anti-ageing trend might have prevented the waste of lots of perfectly good virgins.

Why wouldn't they ban the word? I mean think of the innocent bicycles being exploited for some sick bastards' entertainment. We've got to protect the bicycles!

Surprisingly? Really? Nobody gets ahead enough in politics to even seriously run for President without being as corrupt as nine kinds of hell to begin with. Obama was never going to be an exception because there are no exceptions.
And nobody with power ever wants to give it up; they always want more. What would be surprising is someone willingly giving up power without being forced at gunpoint.

Yeah, it's fine to skip due process when it's obvious that a crime has been committed. That whole jury of your peers and being able to challenge evidence against you in a court of law before your property rights are taken away is just a waste of time.

Careful, if they're really serious about cancelling lifetime subscriptions but don't want to break their promise... Well... The only viable solution is to cancel the subscribers' lifetimes.

Re: Re:
No, but they are quite possibly correct. So long as the number of people who A) were at work during the day, B) would watch if they were home, and C) don't know how to/couldn't be arsed to/forgot to DVR anything, was larger than the number of people chased to other outlets by the time shift, they made the correct choice and did increase ratings.
Were they right? Beats me. My magic 8-ball broke a while back.
