I ditched Gmail for MyKolab and I haven't looked back. An ad free service that allows me to set up email on my tablet and takes privacy seriously is worth paying for.
Us mere plebs have no idea what is good for us or even what we want. It is up to our government and corporate overlords to decide that. All hail our masters!
The best way to protect our children online is for parents to educate them of the threats they will face. For many, though, that is just too much like hard work and it is far easier to just use the Internet as a babysitter. The state has no business interfering.
