i have no actual data, but i wouldn't be surprised if it depended somewhat on how many times people had hit 'report' on your posts, if you included hyperlinks, how inflamitory the article was, and untold other factors.
held for modoration doesn't necessaraly mean it won't go up. just means a human will check it on the way past. in theory, anyway. (think i had one of my posts held at one point, if i remember rightly. contained links or something. took a little while but it did get posted)
well, there's certainly a moral question to be asked about it at that point, but it's no longer in the realm of 'absolutely should not be done, ever, under any circumstance, because it breaks the entire system'
that's my thinking on it anyway.
(i can imagine a few situations where i wouldn't object much, but they almost all involve enemies in an actual war or something... torture's not that reliable a method of information gathering anyway... and i fail to see any justifiable reason to employ it for any other purpose)
... pretty sure it wasn't Supposed to be workable. just, you know, the sort of 'if it weren't compleatly impossible this would fix Everything' kind of idea people come up with when they know it has no hope of getting anywhere.
it depresses me to see this. here abouts the tickets will run you to twenty bucks or so (that's NZ, so call it 12-13 US) and snacks ... well, seriously, if you Want to spend stupid amounts on sub-par snacks you probably could, but most people either just buy a few gummy things or a thing of popcorn (over priced at five dollars NZ or so) if they're particularly like that kind of food... and eat at the food court right before/after the movie. (because most of the theaters are in malls or walking distance from resteraunts etc) or at home (because... well, honestly, a lot of Kiwis would take their own home made/supermarket bought food to the theaters if they were allowed, while the railways and airlines pretty much assume you're going to by default except for really long international flights, to the best of my knowledge)
Re: Corruption and the end of the pure play Republic.
represenative democracy, much like the corporation, mostly provides a get out of jail free card when it comes to responcibility for screw ups. at least with a dictator one knows who to shoot to get things changed :S
not that i'm exactly a fan of dictatorships, they're far more prone to going off the rails.... but far easier to fix too. like efficiancy, stability is not inherantly a Good thing... or at least, it has a maximum beyond which it becomes problematic. representative democracy is not at all about the will of the people. it's about preventing revolt and sudden shifts.
i'd have to reword it, but if i remember rightly they managed to decouple the three strikes and the 'you get kicked off' bit.
three strikes then it goes to arbritration, or some such, and at least some ISPs plan on being rather obstructionist about this.
however, kicking you off requires a court order, which, as the thing was presented when i read about it, didn't actually involve the rest of the process at all.
NZ gets a lot of stupid laws this way.
also a fair number of 'see? it worked in this compleatly different place that is nothing like NZ, so surely it will work here without any modification!' type plans.
oh, worth noting that at least some of the smaller parties are prone to only binding their MPs to the party line on certain platform specific issues and allowing a conscience vote, so far as their MPs are concerned, on almost everything else.
well, except when the nonsense that is coalition agreements gets in the way.
(properly speaking there shouldn't even be a government/opposition divide. the house as a whole is the 'government' and the opposition only applies at election time (the people who didn't get in) or on an issue by issue basis (the people who disagree with you). the ministarial selection process is Supposed to be entirely under the control of the governer. unfortunately, the party system and an unwillingness to break tradition for fear of triggering a constitutional crisis (because God forbid they atually follow the consitution if it could do that(though for all i know they've finally got around to changing it. flexible and all that)) break this ideal horribly)
yeah, but how much say anyone gets in the meeting and how democratic the decision making in caucus actually is varies from party to party (or at least it used to. labour has a history of being very democratic at that level, national not so much).
still, while making seem a little less suspect, that doesn't exactly change my point that once that decision is made, the individual MP's actual opinion doesn't mean much. :)
well, some of that's just because it looks good from a public relations stand point and the parties are more significant (at the expense of the individal MPs) than in a lot of places.
i lean in the general direction of agreeing with you anyway though.

the illusion that it is otherwise is simply a ploy to ensure stability and avoid revolt.
