Americans will need to keep an eye on their elected representatives at least until the next mid-terms. I think there will be a bloodbath and Trump will be more or less neutered bu a new Democrat (majority) legislative.
Even though I do agree that some sort of limited copyrights could be given to creators to help them (ie: much shorter term, limited to commercial use etc) you are right when you say there wasn't any time where copyright really helped progress and arts. Since historic times when copyright was enacted to protect patterns in textiles it was always about protecting the pockets of a small group. You can't possibly benefit anyone by setting copyrights with infinite duration (for all purposes, something that extends well beyond my expected lifetime is infinite to me), carved in stone in such a way that nothing can be built upon it and, worst of all, can be assigned to somebody other than the creator him/herself.
That's why I currently oppose all and any form of copyrights. Awesome creators will be awesome and will make money regardless of copyrights. In fact, most little creators make money *despite* copyrights nowadays.
"protect minors from the physical and psychological damage caused by their being used in pornographic work depicting sexual conduct which involves minors."
"Do not worry!" said the State. "We will be the ones causing great psychological harm to protect her from suffering psychological harm from others!". Makes total sense.
It would be interesting if teens all over the country decided enough bs is enough and turned themselves in on the nearest PD with pictures of themselves naked in their phones. I'd LOVE to see how these idiots would react to the prospect of putting millions of teens in jail and ruining the future of the country. Oh wait, they are already ruining it in multiple ways.
"I am just saying that your relentless assault on free-market is what directly lead to this."
Read what Mike replied to your other deranged comment directed towards Stephen. I'd say your relentless dementia on a free-market utopia is amusing and wouldn't lead to anything anyway. My relentless questioning over what's clearly a regulatory capture you mean? On an issue that will not solve itself without proper regulation due to the simple fact that this area is one shiny example where free-market *tends to fail* and clearly failed? Yeah, right.
"all would succeed "IF" the person overseeing them were truly benevolent"
We do agree that human nature prevents most systems from being implemented in their pure glory then. But it seems we disagree on the benevolent savior. I do think politics and democracy are the way towards a more balanced world. But we won't have that without some heads rolling, perhaps not in the figurative sense only. I do hope I'm wrong though but history says I'm not.
"If you were in Pai's seat, you would be as corrupt as he because the system is configured to only allow the corrupt to rise. You have been fed your own waste and you dance in glee as you consume it!"
Funny, Wheeler failed to be corrupted then. At the very least he listened to the people and took mostly sensible and pro-consumer positions. And he didn't have to create DoS attacks out of thin air or resort to dead people supporting his views to get it trough. Of course, this will be tested in courts but I'm quite confident Pai is in for a sound defeat.
Plenty of dogs salivating over the tasty nothing they are getting as the very first comment here illustrates. Still, it's good to see some folks waking up to all the fireworks these companies throw to divert attention from their own empty rhetoric.
Re: ALL available empirical evidence shows that news publishers produce content and provide news aggregators with unearned advertising revenue.
Because Google can't possibly make money by providing a good service while also directing traffic (as it's empirically proven) to the publishers sites as well and delivering them more money (through their own advertising towards that extra traffic) without charging a penny. ALL OF YOUR MONIES ARE BELONG TO THE PUBLISHER!!! Right?
Sure, because such behavior is forbidden under current regulatory environment and it *still happens*. Notice that even with scrutiny it still happens in the thousands?
It's not ok. Percentages are misleading. Very low values can still mean thousands being defrauded and millions of extra, illegally acquired money to the company. The wonders of huge mono/duopolies!
Re: Techdirt advocates idiots yelling at random people in bars.
Seriously? I'd just go to another part of the immensely huge bar that contains more than half of the world population. And if the person kept coming at me I'd use existing laws that apply to the physical bar to sue him/her for harassment on the virtual bar.
Along with what has been pointed out already, and even if you are right (you aren't), it's still 0.4% too many. And it would keep happening if not under scrutiny.
lol, right, right, free market is god, commuunism is bad, didn't read the article, have no education on history but keep ranting on what you don't know etc etc.. We know, we know.
Yep, sounds like the type of company that can self-regulate and adhere to net neutrality principles and general good practices towards its consumers alright. Ajit Pai that little smart devil!
Seriously this is just history repeating itself. A bunch of people wanting to dominate the world and stuff. It's just that now you can't go conquering. The US, UK, China, Russia, Germany etc. All of them are engaged in this shitty struggle for more power and more control.
