It doesn't matter how big the economy of something is. What matters is how big the lobbying budget of that something is. Right now, the copyright and patent industries have far bigger lobbying budgets than the internet, so those two areas win out over the internet every time.
Re: Re: What definition of "tech job" are they using?
Seems to me to be a far fairer definition than that of "copyright industry jobs" in which the gas station attendent at 7-eleven counts because they have a spinning rack with cds and movies in the store.
Question: Why are you so hell bent on turning the discussion from the false shut down of a legal and legit award show stream into a rant about copyright infringers? This story is not about copyright infringers at all. It is about the over reach of copyright enforcement and the negative impact it has on free speech. Stop trying to derail the discussion.
So you are saying that no free speech was infringed when the Hugo Awards had their stream shut down for a false copyright infringement claim? You are an idiot aren't you?
This has nothing to do with the lack of SOPA or SOPA-like laws. This has been the norm for many years, all because of the DMCA. The DMCA was the inch we gave the copyright maximalists and this is their mile. Get your facts straight.
I am a huge Abbott and Costello fan and Jack and the Beanstalk is one of my favorites. I remember watching that one as a kid frequently wearing out my parent's tapes. Another of my favorites is Africa Screams, which I bought my Mom a copy of on DVD for Mothers Day once because it reminded me of her. She was a great influence on me when it came to such great classics.
I think the point is that punishing a foreign company/website for perceived crimes in the US is just wrong. What will the US do next, start ticketing people in France for jaywalking?
I am talking more along the lines of people like Amanda Palmer and Penny Arcade. They both had complaints that they didn't "need the money". Yet, they went on to have successful Kickstarters because they connected with fans gave them a reason to buy. That is the point of this. Kickstarter is not a panhandling service. It is a way to get people to buy into a project before release. A way to have fans feel invested in the project in a meaningful way. That does not require a need for money.
Right there next to the "submit" button is a "review" button. Clicking that one allows you to see how your comment will appear in the thread and gives you an opportunity to revise and edit. Accomplishes exactly what you want.
But physical media is still the most likely way to get less popular subjects into the market.
Where did you get this idea? The introduction of older and lesser known titles is one of the great things about Netflix. I have watched so many older westerns and sci-fi movies that I missed growing up and would cost me thousands of dollars to get physically. Instead, I can pay $8 a month and watch anything on it any time.
The dvd will die when it is replaced by a better medium just as vhs and laser died when the dvd was perfected.
The DVD is being replaced by a better option, streaming. Is everyone able to stream yet? No. But in the early days of the DVD, not everyone had a DVD player. Broadband is expanding, but give it time to expand fully.
There are a number of people in this country who feel that such forfeitures and seizures are a violation of due process. To allow the government to basically steal stuff from citizens with little more than a gut feeling that the property was used in a crime is an outrageous violation of an individual's right to property.
Yes, because being extradited in order to be questioned is such a non-issue. I mean, if you id nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide. Right? Isn't that how this works?

I am going to patent wood. That way I can retire tomorrow as pretty much everyone is the world is infringing my patent and they have to pay me all the money they have.
