I'm sorry... color me stupid, but what the fuck does this ruling about membership in an organization and the ability of the state to see that membership have to do with the ability of corporations and unions to swamp our speech with their more 'equal' speech?
Just applying some very basic Google-fu I can find a reference to "doubly linked lists" in the original version of The Art of Computer Programming by Donald E. Knuth, published in 1968 (pg. 278). So how on earth was a patent issued for something as basic as this? It's like issuing a patent on doing long divison.... OMFGWTFBBQ this is insane!
I am utterly flabergasted a patent was issued for a doubly linked list. It is a basic algorithm of computer science - developed in the late 50's and early 60's. How on earth can this abomination be patentable?
Here's to the next 15 years! To bad I'm not in San Fran, I'd love to grab a nice IPA with you guys - especially since I know the Tim's won't be there! ;-)
Regardless - 50K posts is an awesome achievement, and I'm glad we're here to rouse the rabble!
This is a step in the right direction... The question is will it be used to invalidate existing patents, a reactive action, or prevent bad patents going forward, a proactive action? Perhaps both, but the cynic in me says it will be neither. People will compile massive piles of evidence against a particular patent, but the USPTO and/or the courts will simply ignore it as usual...
I don't necessarily agree with the author on some of the minor details - but the overall point is spot on.
Both of the political parties in the country are equally and egregiously guilty of rigging the game to 'beat' the other team - not do what is right or even needed for the district or state they represent. The end result is two amped up teams, playing with our country's future like it's Monday Night Football(tm).
The two party system has to go, or at least allow more accountability to the voters. The ogliarchs here in the US will continue to buy both sides, and rig the system in their favor no matter who pretends to steer the ship...
bleah... even ranting like this makes me feel unclean - I need to go shower to escape the filth that is our political system.
But I will definitely find this book to learn more...
because that would remove the barriers their paymasters have paid so much to install (sunk costs and all...) - and then they'd lose all that soft, silky smooth, oh so luxurious cash!
