This isn’t about the end of the internet. This is about Mccuntell ensuring that the stimulus package for $2k doesn’t pass. So Mitch the Liche has created a scenario where Democrats (and Trump) -and the majority of Americans are in a lose-lose situation: let the stimulus packs get backed up or pass the $2k increase, but risk a digital ecocide and putting the economy into an apocalyptic depression. It’s not about whether or not section 230 is going away (and I highly doubt that), but it’s about doing things McConnell’s way.
At this point, is it even worth creating a digital and economic genocide just to give American households each the equivalent of a petri dish?
Re: 'Blackmail'? Never heard of it, that some strange food?
Bruh.
Two words: Unintended Overreach. My problem with this bill is that it isn’t just against porn, but it’s an indirect attack on the freedom of expression and privacy. What happens when content that isn’t porn but has nudity or adult themes? That content could end up being swept into the deluge. The bill isn’t just asking for a database, but also upload filters to delete erotic videos, pictures, even fictional drawings, unless the actors taking part has written evidence of consent.
So far, according to the website, SISEA has been introduced, read twice, and has been referred to a committee for analysis and have not been introduced in congress. Last action was Dec. 17th, six days ago. This could mean one of two possibilities:
The page hasn't been updated and the bill somehow was able to be sneak into the omnibus bill. Or:
SISEA missed the Omnibus train and thus going through the usual process for bills.
I'd like to believe the second route because there could be a chance to stop SISEA in its tracks. Also after all the heavy news of the CASE act passing and the Copyright wet dream reform, I REALLY want to be optimistic about something.
Re: Re: I have had it up to here with this bullshit
Preventing a bill from becoming law isn’t what I had in mind. I’m just saying is that bills that have not gone through the lawmaking process or at least approved by a judiciary body should not be included into the omnibus bill. It’s impossible, but There has to be some level of check against that.
The idea that Congress can sneak in anything unrelated to the omnibus bill without debate during a pandemic is inherently bullshit. What the yearly bill actually feels like a Trojan assault on freedom of anything online.
I am not mad about the CASE act passing. It’s still a bad idea, but the overwhelming consensus in the House proved that it’s path to law was somewhat inevitable. But I am more mad that this, the Tillis bill and that absolute territory porn ban were being passed without debate. This is becoming problematic and extremely shady. There needs to be a law that prevents bills that were not debated or not approved by judiciary bodies from being shoved into end-of-the-year legislation. It’s a pipe dream, but it would be a nice check on the Congress in rushing laws.
But the saddest thing is seeing my party, the Democratic Party, something that I’ve been apart of since registration at the end of my teenage years, not only didn’t raise an iota of a fuck in regards to these bad ideas, not only support these horrendous bills, but have the gull to make defecating on the first amendment bipartisan. Most of the Democrats in the Congress have became no better than their Republican counterparts. I’ve never felt so betrayed by my own party.
The intention of the bill is target supposed towards websites, not users. This isn’t a defense of Tillis, I think the wording is extremely vague, and the real concern is to which websites are he referring to. but I will say that it’s unlikely mass incarceration for you tubers or streamers.
Really the government is controlled by two outsider groups:
One is a warmongering, overbloated greed machine that invades others for the sake of the constitution, proclaims that our country is free, but ruins masses of innocents in the process and has entrenched itself into the lives of almost every politician and it acts as a contradiction of the intended principles of the United States of America.
Good lord, why does this transition have to take the longest. Just 35 more days till the Trump administration is gone for good (at least for now). I’m well aware that Joe Biden will be problematic for the internet, but you know what? I’d rather fight one war with Biden than a thousand wars with Trump.
I guess that I’m all glad that this bill was largely anti-climatic, so anti-climatic that I retract my hot take. But that doesn’t mean that the proposal or Thom Tillis is out of my criticism. Tillis is still a copyright shill and what he has planned for the future is still not encouraging. As for the proposal, it’s not terrible, but not impressive either. It’s still a bad law, but not apocalyptically bad. Just pointlessly bad. We were all expecting SOPA-LITE, but instead we just got SOPA with ZERO calories.
I’m both cautiously relieved and outright furious for having a days-long anxiety attack over something largely inconsequential. But the question that still remains: “Y tho?”
Honestly, I think that this bill is worse than the CASE act. The CASE act is fundamentally flawed and possibly unconstitutional, and the 30k is extremely punishing and excessive, but at least with the CASE act, there could be improvements, at least you have a “chance” to fight the odds by opting out.
But whereas the CASE act feels like a half-baked cake with eggshells, this proposal feels like a frozen sirloin steak that was microwaved and you are forced to eat it barely-heated and still raw. This proposal will make a criminal out of “millions” of streamers, all because they do something as innocent as streaming copyrighted material, whether they’re aware of it or not. This completely ignores the first amendment and a blatant middle finger on fair use and free expression. The fact that Thom Tillis would rush a delicate discussion as copyright enforcement and its implications is not surprising in the slightest, but incredibly corrupt.
Congratulations Tillis, you did the impossible by making me compliment the CASE act!
Considering how gun-ho Tillis is with free-speech, I think we have every right to be doubtful that his Copyright reforms are going to be for the sake of people.
