I think it's largely "whatever the Orthodox Church wants it to be" as backed up by "whatever authoritarian and reactionary elites want it to be".
Unfortunately the religious 'vacuums' of the Communist Era seem to have lead to the Orthodox and Catholic Churches making up for lost time - and proudly marching back to the early last century with social attitudes.
Ban 'teh gheys'? Yes! Spend millions on new churches? Yes! Feed the poor or help the unfortunate? Get lost!
Iceland-the-country obviously should only be allowed to call themselves by their own name 'Ísland' and allow a poor honest food seller to use its unoriginally-descriptive-and-not-at-all-stolen name.
Then of course the country can be sued by any company with the word 'Island' in their name! Starting with 'River Island'...
What you are talking about is Authoritarianism, and it can be reached from the Left or Right. When I was a child, a mere 30-odd years after WW2, it was very obvious to me that there was very little functional difference to the man on the street between living under Hitler, or under Stalin. (Although I'm a lot more aware of nuanced differences now.)
The Right is as capable of doing 'big government' as the Left. It just likes bombs and guns and peering into bedrooms/panties and enforcing religions of choice. The Left can get over-protective, over-sensitive, and just as prescriptive.
In both cases, they involve far too much government trying to prop up its own power, stifle dissent, and waste money on non-democratic wastage.
Well, you Righties and your Obama/Clinton/Soros boogeymen, propped up by ABC/NBC/MSN/CBC etc...
You mean the healthcare originated by the right-wing Heartland Institute, trialled by Republican would-be President Mitt Romney, and very much in the Democratic Party's 2008 manifesto? Supposedly using a manoeuvre that the Republicons would never ever do?
They were guilty of bad tactical planning, and I can appreciate they wouldn't want to be palmed off quietly like Officeware - but if they had as strong a case as they thought they could still have made some nice cash selling or licensing the name right from the get-go.
However, lying in court about it is particularly stupid and illegal, and certainly deserves them their $jack payout.
What's scary is that this is happening under the "Soshalist Keeenyan Moooslem Atheeeist 0bummer" (even if he's only continuing Bush's ethos) and it's not even what a less-restrained Republican Administration would be like.
All laws apply equally to all people within a country, whether legal or illegal. Similarly, all general rights relating to the law. You'd never say "oh, she's not a US citizen, she doesn't get a fair trial" or "he's in the US illegally, we can just shoot him out of hand". Or "Oh he's a foreigner, we can just arrest him for speaking his mind"...
While there are certain rights, benefits, perks and responsibilities pertaining to being a citizen (such as voting), the rule of law should apply fairly and equally to all.
Again, like the Repubs were so proud of their ability to occasionally read a newspaper and remember facts from it, especially if they were negative about Obama or Clinton... in this case, the writer is 'remembering' known facts about Trump's own words and those of his picks for cabinet and their past histories and extrapolating forwards... and with considerable more likelihood than some of the Republican predictions.
So when is Obama scheduling his massive gun grab? On Jan 19th, right after declaring himself Dictator-for-Life using Martial Law and simultaneously handing the country over to the UN One World Gub'mint (tm)?
There's gonna be an awful lot of melted Trump snowflakes over the next four year. The next four months even!
If you want shrill, get a WMD or Red State article and change around all Republican/Democrat references and imagine a Hillary Presidency, and then you'll see shrill.
Pointing out in an article that a hard-fought battle barely being won (in the relatively neutral perspective of this blog) is potentially about to be gutted by known opponents of that progress is just normal reporting.
Honestly, is every article that doesn't go "Trump is my bestest homie who can do no wrong and Shrillary should be in prison/dead/on Mars" whiny, shrill or being a sore loser? Get real, snowflake!
