Not to quibble, but you might want to watch your terminology. You seem to be stating a fact ("purpose of vindicating rights that were being violated" - emphasis mine) that the courts have not upheld in a majority of the cases.
It's not a "funny" laugh, it's a "um crap, how do I react to this, oh yeah, maybe a short 'ha ha' laugh will do if I combine it with a WTF hand gesture..."
If they'd bothered to stop and think for a second, they would have realized they needed to research the story a bit. After all, why would Sony corporate allow the Sony Electronics division to withdraw support while the various music and movie divisions are still wholeheartedly in support.
Nothing like a rush to be first and yet getting it all wrong...lol.
Nope... you missed it. The reason the copyright crowd is so bad at analogies is that they've used up all their creativity writing such wonderful movies like Gigli and outstanding songs like Baby (Justin Bieber). I mean, after all, with such amazing talent like that, is it any wonder they have nothing left for analogies????
If you think about it, it's actually pretty easy to understand.
The major media companies are in thrall to their shareholders. Since they are terrified of shareholder lawsuits and downward price pressure, they do absolutely everything in their power to provide guaranteed results. They had a system where they could somewhat reliably predict profit and loss.
With the Internet turning most of that stuff on it's head, the predictions have gone out the window. All the attempts to "go back to the way it was" is merely efforts to return to a point where they can guarantee results and guarantee their shareholders a return on their investment.
At least, that's my current take on the driving force behind all of this. They don't really care about the IP itself - they just care about being able to guarantee the income and in turn, profit and loss.
To be honest, I think comparing the SOPA markup sessions to high school is giving them far too much credit. I have two kids, 10 and 14 and over a dozen nieces and nephews ranging from under 2 to mid-20's. The most apt comparison I found was to kindergarten playground bullies vs their victims.
Yup and the "intent and spirit" of the DMCA is that it would only be used against actual infringement. Instead, we see it used against 30 second clips of babies dancing to some music in the background or (not very good) advertisements for a drop box service.
Did you ever hear the adage "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"? Well, the DMCA was the first one. We're not sitting down for the second one.
If the supporters could show us RELIABLE FACTS from HONEST studies showing ACTUAL harm to the industry as a whole and not just a few large businesses, we might actually listen to your wails of despair. As it is, the only actual evidence we've seen all points to "fat cats" trying to get fatter by controlling that which they have no right to control. Until we see otherwise, we'll continue to object most vociferously.
I would love for the "click on a phone number" feature to now pop up a dialog that says:
Due to Apple being a bunch of unmitigated dicks, you'll have to dial the phone number on your own instead of us implementing an obvious idea. So sorry - call Apple to complain.
To me, this whole conversation is off target because, technically, most "cops" CAN'T put someone in jail. They can arrest them, put them in a temporary holding cell, but only a judge can sentence them to extended confinement.
You know, there's a great line in a movie that's based on a short story by a rather well know horror novelist, but out of fear of trampling some lawyers rights, I won't quote it exactly.
It is, in essense, something about having to go to jail to learn to be a criminal...
I watched a lot of the proceedings yesterday and as a parent of two kids (14 & 10), uncle to over a dozen more, great uncle to another half-dozen and yet, I've never seen a more blatant display of petty, childish bickering in my near 45 years. The absolute refusal of the Hollywood mouthpieces to even rationally discuss the issue was only surpassed by their complete lack of knowledge on the subject.

This is a typical situation where management crafts a policy without understanding the nature of what it is they are trying to control and expects everything to line up with their imagined scenarios. Until either (a) the TSA is abolished or (b) all screening exceptions are removed so that Congress and senior officials get screened as well, these sorts of problems will continue to happen.
In the end, this is why I've eliminated as much air travel from my vacation plans as possible. Between the unknown medical risks of being scanned, potential theft issues, groping issues, general unnecessary delays, etc, the increased speed of travel no longer seems to overcome the "hurdle" of driving or taking the train where possible.
Do you honestly believe (a) that statement wasn't just a ploy for sympathy or distraction and (b) that his daughters would actually follow up? I may be a cynic, but that whole bit about his daughters just seemed fake to me.
Please. You know the "follow up" is going to be "Due to reasons that cannot be released publicly, we've found that all employees acted in good faith and will not be reprimanded."
The cowards won't even have the guts to provide credible evidence.
/Infringement aside, due process MUST be followed or we all lose.

So I have to say what I mean by honor? It is more than acting lawfully. It is that, certainly, but it is more. It is also how you behave even when you can do as you please, especially then. Honor, at the least, means not exploiting the trust of vulnerable others for your own advantage—including strangers—who are relying on certain basic standards of human decency.
If you go by that, it's easy to see that a majority of our representatives have absolutely no HONOR in the least.
