Hey, I guess all those LED lightbulb makers shouldn't copycat the incandescent lightbulb by making something lightbulb-shaped. How long until they get sued for being copycats!
Except, the inventor of the "better mousetrap" gets sued by the one with the "older mousetrap", not because they're similar or the second was based on the first one, but because "we already have a mousetrap we don't need another."
"I'm asking him to produce the basis for his claim that there's no basis for that other claim. Am I just assume that he just assumed there is no evidence, or am I looking at reliable information that he isn't looking at reliable information that none exists?"
It's true this is basic stuff. They teach you this the first day of logic class. Saying "there is no evidence" when not shown any evidence, is not the same as saying "there's evidence that it's not true!". Evidence proves a positive. Lack of evidence proves nothing and can be pointed out.
If someone were to say "the Andromeda galaxy is made of cheese curd" and someone else said "there's no proof of that", you can't argue "how do you know there's no proof!". Show the proof or shut up.
No, actually, rational thought would be to look at the evidence (none of which has been presented), while a faith based assumption would be to presume that something is true without needing any evidence.
One doesn't have to prove that there is no evidence. The lack of evidence itself is proof of the lack of evidence. There is no evidence that proves that there is no evidence.
That's an excellent word to describe how both the content makers and the content consumers are considered in today's culture: peripheral.
It's not the artists who produce music and other content, they're "peripheral" to the great Conglom-O, made up by "the Music Industry", meaning, the guys who print tons of shiny discs.
There's a big difference between "if you don't like the policy of your workplace, quit, or you might get fired" and "if you don't like the policy and don't quit, you go to jail".
I don't think "reason to buy" actually means the primary (or secondary?) function or purpose of the product, but the reason you have for paying for it.
Buy this to listen to (would apply to all music, but is not a reason to buy).
This is as stupid as saying that by copying food stamps or the membership card to a club is the same as copying content. Nobody cares about the artsy curly lines in the membership card, they care that the card allows you to use some scarce good.
Anyone can copy paper money. All you have to add is that little text "not valid currency" so that people don't accidentally exchange it for that scarce value thingy we have floating around. It's not about the pretty pictures in the money, but the implicit scarce services and goods you can exchange for them.
Not just that, they actually believed that the D&D books were actual instructions on how to cast black magic. But no matter how many times I multiply my level by 1d6 I can't manage to cast a fireball...
