That's meaningless. It doesn't mean that that legal framework won't hinder innovation or economic growth.
"Of course the legal framework hinders innovation to some extent. That's my point. We can't just innovate anything we want. We have to take certain things into consideration, like the safety and rights of others."
with one HUGE BUT(t): your premise (in ALL these arguments) is that the existing laws are necessary, reasonable, and fair, and that -by golly- we all just have to play by the same rules...
EXCEPT:
1. they are NOT necessary, reasonable, and fair, which blows your fawning obeisance to The Law as simply being naive in extremis...
2. *as if* said laws were made with all the stakeholders involved and a balance between their interests to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number... that is the OPPOSITE of what happens: a few wealthy/powerful interests control and dominate the process to the exclusion of 99% of us...
3. ...which results in: an UNFAIR system slanted to the interests of the MAFIAA, NOT us 99%...
4. which YOU then posit as some ideal set of laws which are inherently fair, and -gosh, golly, gee- why don't evil pirates want to follow such reasonable, fair laws...
don't they have some *totally* fucked up laws in colorado about how you can't collect rainwater from your own fucking roof to rain barrels for watering landscape/gardens ? ? ?
on the other paw, i hear they have free dope in colorado!
hee hee hee
i might add a lot more about freeing OUR kultur to be used by US for US (bufu?); but for the consumer side of the issue, you've summed it up clearly and concisely...
relatively normal vision, with above-average ability to puzzle stuff out, but those dog damn captchas are insane...
at some levels, it is IMPOSSIBLE to make out what looks like a tenth generation copy from a bad machine that is overlaid with obscuring crap, and you have to re-try a dozen before you get one readable...
that att employee is Mark Klein, one of the few with the principles, will, and balls to go against Empire...
i don't generally have heroes, but he is one amongst all the whistleblowers i greatly admire: manning, whitehead, kiriakou, etc, HEROIC citizens with a conscience...
holder, et al ? fucking zeroes: no respect for the constitution, much less common, proper human behavior and consideration...
1. do NOT go to much in the way of movies anymore because a lot of them are crap (secret-agent-assassin-hitmen-gets-righteous-revenge movies), the theaters are loud, sticky, and crappy, and with cellphone tards, etc the experience is crappy; i'd rather be in my shop...
2. buy virtually ZERO music (okay, i break down and buy a $5 cd or two in the bargain bins), any that i collect, is either freebies, or from the inertnet archive: i despise the MAFIAA so much, i will not contribute a penny to their extortion racket, if i can avoid it...
3. *just about* to the point of convincing SWMBO to cut the cord; in fact, i'm so annoyed at the idiotic games Big Media play, that i'd sooner throw the teevee out the window...
now, *some* of my habits of decreasing Big Media consumption are due to the fact i have plenty of other chores and hobbies to waste time on, if i'm so inclined...
*but* a LOT of my personal decision to disdain Big Media is due TOTALLY to their greedy, grasping, inhumane treatment of EVERYONE...
fuck the MAFIAA sideways with a pineapple...
well, you have to get past the necessary illusions that the powers that be inculcate in us from birth:
we are NOT a meritocracy...
laws are NOT made for the greatest good for the greatest number...
the justice system is NOT fair...
the media is NOT our watchdog...
and -most importantly- it is NOT 'our' (sic) gummint...
what it is, is a kapitalist Empire to strip the wealth of the planet to benefit the 1%...
...and the pitiful mewlings of the sheeple about this 'natural' state of affairs is beginning to annoy our betters: examples are being made...
(see, shwarz, aaron; manning, bradley; kiriakou, john; etc, ad infinitum...)
um, so my faxes belong to who ? boise-cascade who made the paper i faxed with, or brother electronics who made the fax machine, or the phone company who 'formatted' it over their phone lines, or the paper company of the recipient of the fax ? ? ?
here's the thing: it hardly took me 5 seconds of 'thought' to think why the 'argument' that the ISP "owns" our email is simply ludicrous on its face...
now, as big an ego as i have, i can't believe judges who -on average, at minimum- have been through college, law school, practiced law for many decades, etc, do NOT see the same HUGE flaw in both logic and fairness...
that leads to one of two inescapable conclusions: the judge(s) who decide in such a manner are either corrupt, or senile...
Re: Authoritarians Exist, We don't call them out enough
you know, i used to wonder about the thought processes of a lot of nekkid apes who appeared to be supportive of inhumane, anti-human, unfair laws and policies...
(and which -perversely enough- would affect *their* lives deleteriously!)
however, a number of years ago, i read an article which discussed how about 25% of the population of the world are 'authoritarians'... that is, 25% do not want to be Big Daddy, they *WANT* a Big Daddy to slavishly emulate!
as i pondered this sad state of affairs, it occurred to me, *of course* the lazy, the stupid, the clueless, the timid, the weak *WANT* a father-figure to follow and monkey-see, monkey-do:
he drinks from this water hole, then his followers do the same (not knowing *why* that particular water hole is his preference); he eats *those* berries, so they do too; he paints his face *this* way, well they will too...
for the incompetent, makes for a pretty good survival mechanism: don't have to 'know' nuthin', just do whatever that smart, fat, glossy-haired nekkid ape does...
i think of them as speed bumps on the road of life...
just a reminder to all the kampers who think the world started with them:
up until a FEW scant generations ago, 90-95% of the ENTIRE population were engaged in agricultural jobs, or jobs that directly supported agriculture...
today, less than 1% of the population are 'farmers', and damn few are in jobs which support farming...
(AND, -as with most technology- it is a two-edged sword: sure it is 'good' that a smaller percentage of the population can feed the majority, but at what cost ?
land over-worked and made toxic from the habitual application of fertilizers that leave salts behind, farms doused in chemicals that we do NOT know the long-term consequences of using, factory-farmed animals with 'unnatural' diseases due to their super-concentration, foodstuffs processed just short of soylent green, etc, etc, etc...)
but we're so fucking smart, surely we won't collapse the whole ecosystem around our stupid heads...
i can beat that (yes, disgusting pun intended):
in junior high, had a nice guy who was kindy dorky, whose last name was 'Bader', so how respectful was it of all the guys to refer to him as 'Master Bader'...
'course, that was back when 'bullying' was normal...
"...made me wonder why Salon would sully its reputation by publishing something so easily proven stupid..."
bwa ha ha Ha HAAAAA HAAAAA
that there were funny...
*obviously*, you have not been around saloon for quite some time, because it has been scraping the bottom of the barrel for desperation/faux-controversy hits for a LONG TIME now...
really, ever since the estimable glenn greenwald left, it has next to nothing but tabloid crap, ultra-orthodox feministe carping, and sexy/pervy stories... it has become a steaming pile of libtard poop... (and i'm a libtard, too!)
no, saloon is no more, it is a mere shell of its former superficial self-conscious palaver...
