90% of legit online methods of getting Any media (except games) from the US throws up a nice big page saying 'this content is not available in your region'.
compleatly defeating the point in using the Internet in the first place, and leaving over half the english speaking world going 'o..k...' and pirating or giving up... either way, not buying, because, you know, it's not actually available. usually for stupid reasons that have nothing to do with anything other than price gouging.
because it contributed so little to the conversation that a certain minimum number of people decided it was spammy enough to hit the report button? *shrugs*
actually, i seem to remember reading an article or two where he is quoted as outright stating that he Did have an agenda, actually.
even went on to specify what it was.
the point in the leaks were not to reveal the information, but to cause a reaction in those who were taking these dubious and secret actions which would, in attempting to prevent further leaks, paralyze their ability to conduct such actions. (note, this Shouldn't actually stop a government functioning... though it might if said government is excessively reliant on back room dealings and duplicity. for a while at least)
didn't book mark the articles in question and it was a while ago, but i probably got there form techdirt in the first place, so *shrugs*
you know, that whole 'don't end sentences with prepositions' thing?
not actually applicable to English, for two reasons: one: English actually does that, properly, all the time, and always (to the best of my knowledge. certainly for the last century or two, even in formal contexts) has. it was Latin that did not.
second, technically speaking, when you do, they stop being prepositions Anyway and are in fact post positions.
i think you meant to say 'i wonder what they were sued for', or, if you Really want to avoid that post position 'i wonder why they were sued'... though the second one does heavily imply that their being sued is a known fact and happened in the past, rather than conjecture.
this has been your random grammar Nazi fyi of the day :P
(also, yes, i am aware of my incredibly dubious use of punctuation marks and capitals, or lack there of)
on the subject of the actual topic:
yay for smart moves in the face of stupidity... now let's see if it actually has a positive outcome.
the silliest bit is that it's very likely that such warnings would be left in (simply easier) in the non-US versions of said games. you know, all those countries that have actual, government controlled, compulsorily rating systems which include R ratings that mean it is Illegal to sell such content to people under the listed age?
interestingly, R18 seems to either mean porn, shooters set in non-sci-fi settings, or large quantities of gore, here. R16 seems to be excessive swearing and cursing and general illegal behavior. or something like that. it's hard to tell.
basically amounts to 'any game worth touching with a barge pole is either rated M or is a strategy game with out of date graphics. unless it's a shooter, in which case it's probably R# regardless.'
also, 'violent video games linked to aggressive behavior' ... technically true if you think about it. saying there's a link doesn't specify the nature or direction of that link.
problem is, much like the phrase 'going forward', US political speak and newspaper headlines have corrupted the original meaning. (seriously, there is one specific context where 'going forward' makes sense, and i heard Obama use it a couple of times in speeches early on. since then I've encountered Americans, businessmen, and politicians using it every damn time they mean 'in future' 'in the future' or anything of that nature despite the result being nonsense. come on, i mean, if you're going to copy odd turns of phrase like that, at least use them properly...)
i believe that would best be expressed as 'retiring as a director'
which is retiring.
kind of.
one of english's interesting 'kind of ambiguous but not really though still easy to misinterpret if you don't pay proper attention' constructions.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: The Companies Worth Less Than Facebook
plus whatever assets it may have, plus several years to pay itself off ....
50 billion still seems too much, especially given how horribly short sighted investors and share holders seem to be about profits (looking in from the outside)
10 would be believable (pays for itself in five years if you bought it) and i suppose there's a bit of wiggle room for the possibility of finding other ways to make money of it....
but yeah, i mostly think it's bogus valuing based on not having a damn clue....
true, on the other hand it would also lead to an increase in situations where the judge rules based on which party losing will put more cash into the coffers... not exactly just... possibly still an improvement though... possibly.
or, if you use separate words rather than a stock phrase 'just barely a miss' or various other slightly awkward constructions. 'just barely missed' works fine though... tense, mood, all sorts of other fun grammatical things playing around there.
part of the flaw being that the USA is freaking HUGE. you've got a continental Empire going on there. no one but the corporations and the super rich has the Budget to fund a national level campaign in the USA.
