Not quite what it seems? Free to the library card holder but not to the tax payer (one and the same?)? I'd be interested to hear how much it costs DCPL per track.
C'mon.... the thought of him blowing a blood vessel while /random stupid comment/ 'ing his way on Techdirt keeps some of us coming back out of morbid curiousity.
It doesn't matter about his math whether we believe it to be accurate, far short of the mark or far in excess of the actual amount.
The sole point to take from CD Projekt and Marcin Iwinski is that they are competing with "free" and doing quite well out of it. They are on the right track and long may that continue.
Re: Re: Workarounds to continue what you claim you're NOT doing?
I once set up a system to download every new US tv episode posted in a 48 hour period and immediately delete them just to test an internet connection that was flaky as hell...
But we aren't talking about novice computer users, to be able to download files with any file sharing software requires an element of skill, albeit easily obtainable via the help sections of the thousands of indexing sites around the globe.
The novice computer user you are talking about doesn't do filesharing.
They also provide valid services used by both the private and public sectors of society, if you are going to argue that "if a companies products can be used for illegal/criminal purposes = bad" then you need to make a much larger piece of law and apply it to every industry you can pretty much think of.
God damn these "DNS" people... who do they think they are... without us you wouldn't be able to listen to pre-packaged pop tunes or remakes of wonderful films from the 50's and 60's that do no justice to the original, or get halfway through a tv series for us to kill it off with a "fade to black, roll end credits"!
Of the millions of downloads of Skyrim what percentage of people:
a) went out and purchased the game after playing it?
b) wouldn't have purchased it if it wasn't available?
c) wanted a file based backup of the media?
d) realised they didn't like it after 10 minutes play?
e) downloaded and deleted it without installing?
People just don't get it... like the vinyl disc and the magnetic tape the internet has changed the game and the business has to change with it.
You'd have thought that after seeing so many game changers over the last 100 years that these businesses would be able to grasp the change and adapt, but here we are again, all they want is to legislate us back to the period of financial gain after they finally embraced the last tech breakthrough.
A few months ago someone posted a glorious post that fictionalised the buyout of one of the Big Four (as was) recording companies by one of the founders of Google using his own personal fortune... boy I wish that would actually happen. It would appear that the only way we can get away from these dinosaur industries who have failed over the last 10+ years since Napster is to BUY THEM OUT!
Someone shout Sergey Brin and the other boys and girls of the new era and tell them to start buying these companies up.

Bravo to Marcin and all at CD Projekt.

You have to spend tens/hundreds of millions to "create" anything these days... if you can make back hundreds of millions then it isn't worth doing.
