Because they equate the loss of control with the loss of revenue - or least the loss of revenue under the old business model that they had total control over.
Re: Re: Re: Point 4: A "consumption" tax isn't practical.
VAT is a great idea but there should be no exceptions. You can have a VAT rebate on income tax forms for low-income households. But the minute you introduce exceptions, special interest groups will lobby hard to include their own exceptions. So you go from a one-page VAT tax code to a thousand plus page VAT tax code.
And they still don't thank you for paying to see the movie or purchasing the DVD/Blu-Ray. It always makes me feel good when I put in my legally-purchased disc and the first thing that comes up is the anti-piracy warning from the FBI. Hey fuck nuts I paid for the movie.
Oh, and thanks for the stupid copy-protection on DVDs and Blu-Rays that makes it impossible to watch movies on my desktop computer. Thank god I have a program that removes all that junk and creates a file that I can play - and without the FBI warning.
Hey entertainment industry, if you made it easy for me to watch what I want when I want and on what device I want, I'd probably double, even quadruple how much money I spend on your content.
Define better? For years we heard that Beta was better than VHS. And we all know who won that contest because the consumer chose recording length over recording quality.
First, the US should abolish all software and business process patents. That would eliminate the overwhelming majority of patent trolls and patent lawsuits.
It's in the financial interest of residents of Marshall to ensure that juries rule in favour of patent trolls.
More lawsuits means more judges and clerks. More lawsuits means more office space being leased to patent companies. More lawsuits means the need for more jurors (who receive compensation for their time). More lawsuits means more out-of-town lawyers at your local hotels. More lawsuits means more meals and catering from local restaurants. And so on.
To insert logic into this would destroy an entire industry.
Why do I need government regulation when I can just type in Bing.com and use that as my search engine? Chrome lists Bing.com as a search engine - and you can even make it the default search engine. How evil of Google.
People have been "file sharing" for decades. Back in the day it was called "mix tapes". I remember buying boxes of Maxell XLIIS cassette tapes and recording my friends records and CDs back in the 80s. I also remember buying a ton of music and going to plenty of concerts.
Except that Disney is saying it was copyright that brought you creativity. Well, no. It was people who based classic movies on public domain material that brought you that creativity.
If copyright terms were not extended, Disney would have still become a media behemoth. Copyright did nothing for Disney other than increase it's costs.
Don't forget that one of the reasons why there is a Hollywood is that a bunch of movie companies didn't want to pay royalties to Edison for his new-fangled technology; so they moved out west to make it more difficult for Edison to collect.
This is also the same industry where record-breaking blockbusters "lose" money because of Hollywood Accounting.
This is an industry founded and thriving on lies, cheating and deceit.
