Nice story, and a little out of the normal breadth of techdirt stories, but this is good - it shows an underdog doing things differently to win, and then show an instance where underdogs worked well and took down the incumbents.
Do I get to go "FIRST!!!" as well .. oh this site's a bit too mature for that ;)
Is that given the quantity of viewers 9 has over here it's damned unlikely there'd be enough people using the service to make the time spent re-presenting the data worthwhile.
9 does air 'a current affair' and 'today tonight'. Check them out for an example of tabloid TV..
Err .. no we're entitled to own guns we just don't think we need one when we're walking the dog. The gun obsession is one thing I really dislike about Americans. You have enough ammo and people to keep yourselves busy for ages - yet you keep invading other places to kill the people there.. What gives ?
You may want to compare the "pirate" google page to the normal (in your language) page, and their search results. Then consider it may just be a "language"..
"All laws particular ones like DMCA, should include server penalties for mis-use that can be applied ..."
You mean confiscate their server ? Cool. :)
I agree though - almost every law should have a means of stopping and penalising illegitimate or 'outside the spirit of the law' usage - whether the takedown is automated or not (I don't think they should be allowed either).
Otherwise in a wildly exaggerated scenario a Warner artist may name their song "High Street" then have that text found on a Google Streetview (the sign for said street) and receive a takedown notice from Warner.
In the comments, seems someone has inside knowledge on this one. If it's anyone relating to the case that's pretty bad form.
As for using DOS .. sometimes it's just faster than Windows .. eg copying a bunch of similarly named files from a network drive is a hell of a lot faster without waiting for Windows.
IT HAS SIX WHEELS FFS.
I can see that with a quick google search. Why haven't the designers noticed that they have 3x the wheels they claim to have ? Sums up GM nicely
I could be searching for a frequency measuring device .. and have my term misinterpreted for a company that rents the name being searched for.
As a result I go for Hertz, get only Hertz rent a car ..
By the same logic each advertiser should also get their own separate 2 page spread in the yellow pages. After all you don't want to see Joe's Plumbing when you're actually looking for Kym's Plumbing, do you ? :)
Bah, you lot and your limitless internet for 15c/month (and complaining!) makes me cranky.
I pay 109/mth for 1500/256 + VOIP (all free calls 'cept to mobiles) and get shaped to 64kb/s past that point. I am pretty sure my ISP does *something* to my P2P, it seems nowhere near as fast as it was even 2 months ago -- 40 seeds and I get 10kb/s. It'll get even better when we get the "save the kiddies" filter. Don't laugh, once one "free and democratic" country gets one in, it'll be the thin end of the wedge.
Think about the wider scope though - what if YOUR ISP throttles traffic from a site I visit and traffic from that site to me goes through them ? Not only will it affect their own customers, but anyone "downstream".
I mean really .. do those people expect us to believe that ??
@Matt : No we get ads rammed down our throats on cable and free to air TV in Australia. I can understand some on free TV but when I pay $70/month for Austar, I do not want to see ####ing ads. (self censored)
Anyone who trusts facebook with their data is silly. You -do- know that don't delete anything. They're not there so you can poke your mates, they're there to profit off you. A piece of paper on your desk at home probably has more security than your facebook data. All it needs is one dodgy friend ..
I think 'O RLY ? YA RLY' would've been much more in context :) I think you'll find in general these days whatever civil right they want to intrude upon, they either link it with terrorists, paedophiles or both. Then when it's opposed, they call you one or the other. Case in point, net censorship in Australia. Be interesting to see what you (techdirt) think of that but all I see is American stuff on here.
@usmcdvldg - I think to be fair the ratio is probably the other way around - and no, I am not a copper.
To be honest I think the button presses on a tone dial phone could be far more damaging for you than any conversation.
