'you can't have your cake and eat it too' would be expressed in modern, normal english, if it weren't a 'saying', as: "you can't eat your cake and still keep it" (that still doesn't sound right). basically, think of a really awesome looking cake. the sort people say 'that looks so good it'd be a shame to eat it'. well, they can either observe it's awesomeness, or eat it, but doing one precludes the other happening at the same time, and eating it prevents you from then viewing it as an awesome cake. (we'll leave it's other states and later events aside for now.)
personal observation of Americans in the wild (ie, on the Internet) would tend to indicate that you mean 'good mindless party following sheep', republican or democrat, the only sane choice when it comes to American political parties is moving to a different country.
(among other things to note: the republicans and democrats have, in the course of their history, actually swapped ideologies, or parts there of, more than once :P )

i dunno... avoiding microsoft as much as possible is just good sense, avoiding apple unless you're doing stuff in the fields where they're actually the best option isn't an inherently bad idea, and no matter how much good they do, anyone in as powerful a position as Google needs to have an eye kept on them to make sure they Keep doing good.

actually, i seem to remember a few qualified individuals (professors and such) concluding that wikipedia was at least as accurate as, and often more accurate than, most print encyclopedias. but you do have to pay attention to what the subject is, as some get mucked around with quite a bit.

pretty sure we privatized the infrastructure as well... just regulated the result into submission. also (comparatively) recently unbundled the network, too.
amusingly, we used to have competition only for toll (long distance) calls in the form of a company called 'clear'. it was then bought up by (surprise!) Telstra, who are the ones laying the fiber and providing the cable TV. they are the competition here *grins* also the ones who finally derailed the first attempt at that stupid 3 strikes Internet piracy bill.
so, yeah, Telstra's the competition here. should keep right on working as long as the commerce comission or whoever keeps coming down hard on anti-competative practices... (telecom split up voluntarily because of significant hints that the government would force them to if they didn't clean up their act quick smart... hehe.)
