funny how those 'theoretical' (yet real) losses of sales (like yours) due solely to THEIR stupidity, copy protection, and people outright hating on them, aren't tallied up by the industry; but they can nail down their 'losses' due to piracy to the nearest trillion...
funny, that...
there is a famous aphorism about politicians along these lines:
Once you can fake sincerity, you've got it made.
correlation does not equal causation, blah blah blah; *BUT*, sometimes it does: kongresskritter = sociopath ? ? ?
i bet the rich, loudmouthed ones are...
oh, wait...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: WHERE are these advertisements? WHERE does Mike's "living" come from?
1. agree that it is NOT egregious 'censorship' to have the 'report' button, *but* it is a type of 'soft' censorship...
(AGAIN, techdirt deserves major props for the amount of free speech they DO allow; i do NOT hold this tiny bit of (barely/kinda/sorta) censorship against them...)
2. as far as that goes, i like the slashdot method of commenting and 'reporting' that the readers assign cumulative numeric values to the posts, and a person can surf at whatever 'number' they choose... personally, i almost always show 'all' posts, no matter how downgraded by the community...
3. another related issue, is that of threads gone by: you get a good debate/dialog going, and then it scrolls off the page before the day is out... it seems like there should be *some* easy method to keep active threads available and continuing... (even if them become divorced from the original article)
4. a pie-in-the-sky idea i'd like to see implemented, is that of having designated posters/'debaters' square off against each other on the issues... there are far too many active and interesting threads that scroll off the radar screen (to mix metaphors, after all, what's a meta for?), and that also get derailed by sideshows (perhaps purposefully by bots, but that is another thread)...
maybe by a vote of the posters as to who goes head-to-head against whom ?
like i say, just a barebones wish of an idea...

Re: Limited "monopolies" of a patent here and there are fine.
ole blue, you *almost* got it *mostly* right:
it is only 'old news' that 'big equals bad' if you don't pay attention to our last couple hundred years of his story where -in fact- 'big equals good'...
now, it is my personal opinion, that any time an organization gets beyond the normal range of tribal sizes (say, 20-200), then the organization begins breaking down from stunted democracy, toxic secrecy, and lack of accountability...
the internal checks and balances are then gamed by the players who have the juice (and/or borderline personality)to hijack the system to their favor...
that essentially describes our whole crony-capitalist system at the present time... patent/copyright trolling is only a subset of the overall problem...
'solving' the patent/copyright trolling problems STILL leaves an inhuman and inhumane system in control...
on the other paw, 'solving' the system itself will also align patent/copyright issues to the benefit of us 99%...
