Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Logo by Nina
Good sleuthing, Sherlock! There's no way she could have found me without me contacting/recruiting/brainwashing her first. I mean, how could she have known I was both a graphic artist and a critic of DRM? As a covert operative, I keep a very low profile. Oh wait.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Logo by Nina
Why Nina Paley?
Librarian emails me asking how to commission a "Librarians Against DRM" logo. I say I'll do it for a donation to be determined by her. I send them 6 variations, they choose 2 and post them. I receive a donation check in the mail, which I haven't cashed yet because I think maybe I should have just donated the art in the first place (still wondering what to do about that).
I guess it shouldn't surprise us that a politician lied and went back on his basic principles in favor of a huge check from industry.
I'm sure he did it for more than the check. There's also the status. Repping the MPAA means lots of schmoozing and photo ops with movie stars. I'm told politicians love that, even when they're not being paid directly.
Gads, you are heroic, vivaelamor. The fortitude required to respond to that (let alone read it) and then with humor and lightness - well, if I had it, the quilters' trollfest on my post would have twice as many comments, half of which would be worth reading.
You might want to go look at the other half that's there instead, if you can stomach it.
Free here does not mean "free of charge," it means "not restricting others."
There are plenty of quilt patterns offered free of charge. For example, Quilter's Cache offers free of charge patterns. But notice the terms of use:
You may print out the information on these Web pages for your personal use and make as many copies as you need of templates- again- for personal use....
I do not allow the distribution or use of any of my patterns, graphics or site pages in shops or other commercial environments, nor the use of these as teaching material in any commercial way.
No posting of images and/or text from this Web site to another Web site, magazine, etc
Items made from Original designs may not be made for sale.
...or Anything in violation of the Copyrights listed below unless I have already addressed it here.
That is not Free. I understand you may not be familiar with what Free-as-in-Free-Speech means, because you are new here. Welcome! Have a look around, there are many articles discussing free speech and how copyright works.
Now that you know what "Free" means, please send links to quilters who actually practice it. I would love to learn of others. Thank you!
I don't think you understand what "Free" means here. It doesn't mean free of charge, it means free as in free speech. Patterns that are provided free of charge are still copyrighted, considered the "property" of the rightsholders, and are illegal to redistribute without permission.
That is the difference in what Leah Day is doing, and why I wrote about her. I would welcome your links to other free-as-in-freedom quilters, but so far none have been offered here, and I haven't found any.
I should add that I'm sure the copyright-bullying quilters are very nice people, and would never be thought of as bullies within their milieu. It's a world in which many people believe they can own ideas, so threats against copying are accepted as natural and appropriate.
This sets a bad precedent. No respect for Mr. Fairey. I realize some people cling to principles beyond reason, but he goes too far the other way: he's principle-deficient. He could use some.
Repeating a lie over and over again won't make it true.
That technique only sort-of works for giant propaganda machines (a la Orwell's 1984), not little trolls who work for giant propaganada machines.
*By "they" I'm referring to copyrights and patents - those varieties of culture are anti-rivalrous. The same isn't true of trademarks and trade secrets, as Stephan Kinsella pointed out above. But like he says, none of them are property.

Sneaky, isn't it?
